General Information
Dr. Karina Horsti is Senior Lecturer and Academy of Finland Fellow at the University of Jyväskylä. Karina's background is in sociologically and anthropologically oriented media studies. Over the past 16 years she has developed a multidisciplinary profile in transnational migration research by successfully completing research on cultural diversity policies, nationalist populism, and mediated representations of refugees and asylum seekers. Her current research examines public remembering of forced migration and the commemoration of deaths at Europe's borders. She also directs two other projects and a series of explorative workshops.  She collaborates with artists, museums, activists, and refugees, and is inspired by  multimodal and creative methodologies.
Mission and Objectives

My intention is to bring together people who are inspired about experimenting multimodal methodologies and incorporating art, media technologies, and activism in their ways of producing and sharing knowledge. We would be interested in discussing digital, mobile, and ethnographic methodologies; critically reflexive positioning of various people involved in knowledge production (including academics); and new forms of publishing and disseminating knowledge. In collaboration with stakeholders we would seek platforms outside of the academia for presenting theoretical ideas and research results, such as online spaces, film festivals, art galleries, museums, and activist spaces.

Main Projects / Activities

*Remembering migration: Memory politics of forced migration in mediated societies (Academy of Finland Fellow, akademiforskare, 2014–2019, individual grant.)
This project opens a novel research area within research on present day forced migration. In the project, I examine: 1) how death and survival at Europe’s borders is memorialized and remembered and what kinds of cultural identities and social relations are produced, also transnationally, and 2) how these memories become part of the cultural memory of countries where the refugees settle. In other words, how is Finnish, Swedish or Italian “national” memory challenged by the memories of migrants and refugees?
*Borderscapes, memory and migration: cultural representations of forced migration Explorative workshops, Joint Committee for Nordic Research Councils,  January 1, 2016 – December 31, 2017. (PI Karina Horsti, 12 Nordic scholars.)
This project continues my decade long involvement to strengthen Nordic research collaborations. It builds on a series of three workshops, which address how forced migration is represented in cultural productions and media in the Nordic region by bringing two theoretical approaches - critical migration studies and memory studies - into conjuncture with research on mediation. These workshops bring together 12 senior and junior scholars from different disciplines working in Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish and Danish academia.
*Mobilizing the Disenfranchised in Finland, France, and the United States: Post-Truth Public Stories in the Transnational Hybrid Media Space (Helsingin Sanomat Foundation, August 1, 2017 – August 31, 2018, (PI Horsti, two post docs and one researcher.)
This project compares the key agents of the so-called ”post-truth era”: media that are founded on dissemination of mis-information and lies. We examine this phenomenon in Finland, France, and the US by focusing on the inter-connections of mainstream media and the mis-information media, such as MV-lehti, Fdesouche, and Breitbart News. Feeding into fear of cultural globalization these kinds of media aim to grow population that feels ”disenfranchised” from the society.
*Remembering the Tragedy of Lampedusa: radical participation in documentary filmmaking, Kone foundation,  January 1, 2017 – December 31, 2018. (PI Horsti, film maker, researcher, refugee activist.)
The European “refugee crisis” and its human implications, particularly mass death at the European frontier shape European societies and futures. In this participatory filmmaking project we examine the constitution of national and diasporic memory by focusing on the different memories of the so-called Tragedy of Lampedusa of October 3, 2013. In collaboration with survivors and the family members of victims we produce five short documentary films designed to be shared in social media and in mobile devices. In addition, the project develops and analyzes participatory methods in filmmaking.

Mission and Objectives

Mission
ISU aims to mediate the western and eastern thinking, in philosophy and psychology. In addition to establishing the need for a confrontation, it will promote practical knowledge and application of the most suitable principles for an intercultural exchange, tending to the development of transpersonal psychology, which make extensive use of alternative categories and ways of thinking to the understanding of man.
The goal is not specialized or archaeological: you are convinced that only by the disclosure and an accessible presentation of the various areas of research, you can stimulate the possibility of dialogue. Great attention will also be paid to all the theorists who have distinguished themselves by their work of promoting a world philosophy, away from Eurocentrism and exoticism: components that, unfortunately, for some time hinder a serious close examination of the issues in question.”

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

I have studied Law, and my biggest interest was the international law.
And now my biggest concern is the place that I am living in, and the society.
I really think Art and Culture change the social collective mind and way of thinking, I have seen a lot and big changes happening to our socitey the past 4 years, but still we need more, more of accepting and understanding the others who are different from what they call it Normal here in Egypt .
I think my main contribution would have to do with Art, espcialy Music - as it's my career- , another thing so important my main readings and interests are about Gender studies, sexuality and society, cultrual stuff, religion...and others.
I have sent my C.V and I hope you would find in me good potiential to be a part of the Anna Lindh organization.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

It's a pretty active organization, and has to do with a lot of branches from Arts to Cultrual stuff, concerned with the Egyptian problems and how to contribute in solving them, realizing that it's not a very easy society or conditions here nowdays in Egypt generally and Alexandria specifically.
The first time I heard about Anna Lindh was the Farah el Bahr festival happened in the Alexandria citadel...and I was playing with one of the bands at that time..I have seen really good effort and organizing, I remember at that time there was a lot of hassle that had to do with the Anna lindh foundation, and have seen how good and confidently the foundation responded to what happened, since then I was following the foundation activities and the change they are making to Alexandria cultrual and artistic wise, with a lot fo good chances for youth and other organizations.

Main Projects / Activities

Vamos youth services targets 16 to 29-year olds without education, employment or training. The services expanded their operations. Vamos Lahti was launched, and Senior Vamos expanded from Helsinki to Espoo, and new projects were launched for young asylum-seekers and immigrants, and the Roma people. Vamos now operates in six cities: Helsinki, Espoo, Lahti, Turku, Oulu and Kuopio. 1,500 youths were reached out to, and 53% of them were guided onto education and working career paths.  Civic activities involved over 1,300 people in volunteer and peer activities. Volunteer activities were reinforced even further, as 60 new volunteer support families were coached in providing support for underage asylum seekers.  Development cooperation was carried out in southern Africa and Moldova, with the support of a development cooperation appropriation from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The partner churches' social work and participatory approach to work were developed during the projects. The Centre for Torture Survivors in Finland offered humanitarian, medical and psycho-social care and support to immigrants suffering from acute or chronic torture symptoms. These activities reduced the victims' human suffering, risk of social radicalisation, and risk of violence against themselves and others. Tortured or heavily traumatised quota refugees under 24 years of age received specialised children's and youth psychiatry services. Hirundo Day Centre for Travellers offered humanitarian aid in Helsinki. Emergency shelter was mainly provided to European travellers, but also to Finns and paperless individuals. The Kummikylä village support project in Romania improved the living conditions and well-being of the local Roma community, so that the villagers would not have to go abroad in search of a livelihood.
