General Information

Herstory is a multi-disciplinary education platform and cultural movement that tells the stories of women - past, present and future.

OUR DISCOVERY
In contrast to the handful of women taught on the Irish school curriculum, Herstory discovered that there are over one thousand inspirational female role models featured in the Dictionary of Irish Biography.

THE PROBLEM
History censored women’s stories in the past.
Today, popular culture dictates the stories deemed 'worthy' of our attention, diluting women's representation and leaving countless role models in the shadows.  The amnesia of women’s stories is not just an Irish problem - this is a global phenomenon.

The achievements and struggles of women have been lost in the shadows, resulting in global inequality and a regression of women’s rights. The lack of authentic role models for today’s young girls affects their confidence, self-worth, life decisions, and ability to reach their potential.

WITH YOUR SUPPORT
WE CAN REWRITE HISTORY
AND THE FUTURE.

Mission and Objectives

MISSION
Founded in 2016, our mission is to give youth and the public authentic female role models and a game-changing education programme, inspiring countries around the world to start their own Herstory movements.

OBJECTIVES
Change the way women’s stories are told forever by deconstructing female stereotypes and presenting their complete, multi-faceted characters.

Create a democracy of storytelling; valuing all women equally by showcasing national heroines beside unknown, overlooked women.

Bridge the disconnection between the extensive academic knowledge of women’s stories and the dilution of women’s representation in mainstream media and culture.

Spark a global movement where Ireland inspires the world to celebrate and empower women and girls, as we strive for equality for everyone.

Develop an innovative storytelling platform and education programme with core projects that
can be adapted worldwide.

Main Projects / Activities

Since 2017, the annual International Herstory Light Festival has made national news headlines illuminating landmarks in honour of women and girls. In 2018, Herstory initiated and co-produced the Blazing a Trail exhibition with EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum and the Department of Foreign Affairs – it’s the first women’s exhibition to tour the Irish Embassy network worldwide. In 2019 we co-produced Herstory on RTÉ, Ireland’s first 360° comprehensive women’s storytelling, featuring a major documentary TV series, animation series, podcasts, school workshops and more. See www.rte.ie/herstory. In 2020 we teamed up with Our Table to launch Melting Pot gatherings in support of the campaign to end Direct Provision (Ireland’s notorious refugee system) and celebrate our new multi-cultural Ireland.

Herstory events have taken place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Council of Europe, University of Oxford, Dublin Castle, Belfast City Hall and more. Within 4 years, Herstory has become a household name in Ireland.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Herstory welcomes the opportunity for collaboration and cross-polination with sister organisations in the ALF Network, through the highlighting of women's stories, co-creation projects, and other opportunities.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Herstory is hugely inspired by the incredible work of the Anna Lindh Foundation across the 43 member countries. Cross-cultural projects have never been more important, especially in these globally turbulent times we live in. We know that when we empower women, society greatly benefits on the whole.

General Information
The Anti-Racism Movement (ARM) is a grassroots movement created by young activists in Lebanon in collaboration with migrant community leaders. The Migrant Community Centers (MCCs) are currently ARM’s largest project. The MCCs are free and safe spaces tailored to migrant workers and evolving according to their needs, where they can meet, learn new skills, work together, and access information, resources and assistance. Since their creation, they have been offering free classes and other educational, social, and capacity-building activities, such as language classes, ICT classes, health awareness sessions, rights education, advocacy training, cultural exchange events, social gatherings, and various national holiday celebrations. The MCCs also serve as a hub where initiatives are launched, a space to have celebrations and get-togethers, and a casual space for migrant workers to spend time with each other. MCC’s operations are run by general coordinators and migrant community leaders, in collaboration with members of ARM.
Mission and Objectives

ARM’s goal is to decrease racist and discriminatory attitudes and behaviour among the Lebanese population, and to support changes in the institutions that perpetuate discriminatory and exploitative practices, through sensitization and awareness raising.
MCC’s goal is to make meaningful improvements in the quality of life of migrant workers in Lebanon and in their capacity to self-advocate, and to contribute towards a strengthened and powerful migrant civil society. The MCCs serve to engage, enable, empower, and mobilize migrant communities to advocate for their rights and to decrease discriminatory attitudes and behaviour. Our work focuses mostly on people of Asian and African origin, with a special focus on women migrant domestic workers.
Our theory of change shifts the positionality of migrant workers from beneficiaries and recipients of services to leaders and agents of social change in Lebanon. The MCCs provide the space, tools, resources, and capacity for MWs to self-organise and lead awareness and rights-based campaigns in order to help end discrimination and exploitation, and guarantee protection, rights, and access to justice. In parallel, ARM’s advocacy efforts tackle social issues related to racism, and aim to shift social norms by stigmatizing undesirable attitudes and behaviours, and building support for policy change.

Main Projects / Activities

Empowerment of migrant workers: Building the capacity of large groups of migrant workers to lead self-advocacy initiatives, through MCC’s free educational and training programs, and providing them with support and safe spaces (the MCCs) and assistance.
Fostering Social Change: Awareness-raising and education addressing discriminatory attitudes held by employers and the general public, led by ARM and migrant workers empowered through MCC. These advocacy efforts aim to modify attitudes and perceptions towards foreigners, and to increase public support for non-discrimination, better legal protection and the abolishment of the Kafala System.
Celebrating Cultural Diversity: Promoting migrant worker cultural presence and community, to expose the local population to these significant but largely ignored social groups in Lebanon.
Geographical Scope: Beirut, Saida, Jounieh (through the current MCCs), and national/regional through our advocacy and campaigning efforts.
Fields of Work: Empowerment of migrant workers / women domestic workers, advocacy, awareness-raising, capacity-building, education, community-building, cultural and social activities.

The activities of Omaniae vzw focus on addressing and tackling the misinformation strategies that (mis)guide migrants to engage in a risky and irregular search for greener pastures. In fulfilling its aim Omaniae vzw reaches out (i) to the eighty percent (80%) of African migrants who will be confronted with almost certain death as also (ii) to the twenty percent (20%) that do make it but are soon confronted with shattered dreams and unattainable expectations. As a platform for all migrants and those that think about migrating, the main themes that inspire our activities are: - ADVOCACY: o Omaniae vzw stands as a bridge between undocumented migrants and the government. o In partnership with schools and churches Omaniae vzw campaigns against misinformation and negative influences. o Omaniae vzw develops a comprehensive approach that strives to annihilate forced repatriation, imprisonment of undocumented migrants and the use of excessive force. - INFORMATION: o Omaniae vzw provides information about job opportunities in the migrants countries of origin that will meet the needs of the less privileged. o Omaniae vzw informs migrants on how to remain competitive (through our vocational training program). o Omaniae vzw informs undocumented migrants about legal migration possibilities but also to direct them to opportunities in their home countries. o Omaniae vzw informs migrants about procedures to reacquire their identity card. o Omaniae vzw informs the general public about the mission of Omaniae vzw by being present and making itself known at local (street) festivals. - BI-DIRECTIONAL PROGRAM: o Empowerment training program: Omaniae vzw provides skilled (vocational) training programs that develops and enhances the talents of migrants for use in either the host or the home countries. o Reconnect program: Omaniae vzw organizes itself as network platform through which migrants can reconnect with their families and start planning a successful return.
