General Information
PHOS Civic Association (Photography of society) has risen from the idea of four photographers (Michal Fulier, Andrej Lojan, Laco Maďar, Matúš Zajac) and art theorist (Mgr. Marián Paukov, PhD.) in order to point on the power of documentary photography in the modern world of contradictions and its inseparability from everyday life, the photography, which bears the message about the human and expresses its views on various social aspects of society. A graduate of the European cultural studies (Ivana Pástorová) helps to further develop this idea within this association. We are just at the beginning in the making projects but already we have 3 projects which are devoted to the various social issues. We have already done many presentations of our work in the form of photographic and intercultural dialogue. We want to use the form of dialogue also in the future because we think that this is the way how to develop and enhance the art of documentary photography. We cooperate with the non-govermental organization Depaul Slovensko which offers homeless and disadvantaged people the opportunity to fulfil their potential and move towards an independent and positive future because everyone has a place to call home and a stake in their community. Our sources of funding: sponsorship, grants
Mission and Objectives

We are interested in a documentary photography because we think that the classic form of the document is the most viable way and concept how to express our views on social issues of the society. We also think that the documentary photography is very needful in that way the photography is a form of art and human medium.Works of the documentary photographers of this association are met in the way of finding the decisive moment of capture of the human story aiming to jointly honour the Henri Cartier-Bresson and the other founders of the principle of decisive art, but each of these photographers does it in his own way. The purpose of artistic value of their photographs is initiation of the association of perception and feelings from which the beauty of expression is resulting. Black and white, but also color documentary photography essays of these four photographers are interpretations of the apparent reality of the objective world which is flowing in the inner depths of intense emotions, relationships that will determine their further interpretation in the perceiver. By this they create the possibility of an open cultural dialogue.
We are also working on the project HOPE - Activity of the Nightshelter of St. Vincent de Paul and the Shelter of St. Louise de Marillac will be recorded by the sensitive photographic document with artistic tendencies and interpenetrations in the long term. Our goal is to show the importance of the work of people who every day consistently help those in need not only by nursing and social assistance, but mainly by psychological support. We want to portray the whole range of homeless´ immediate feelings, their relationship between the inside and the outside world, as well as the documentation of the active support of the shelter´s staff, sponsors and supporters of the shelter.

Main Projects / Activities

“SLOVAKIA“ (Untouched Metamorphoses of the Present Time) relates with the purpose of presentation the country of Slovakia. We want to portray the typological intersection of the present Slovakia with the fragments of cultural interferences on the basis of observation of events and features. Please, in attachment you can find more information about this project and about our association.
"City Confrontations" Portrayal of the paradoxes which are standing side by side. Flowering and poverty, modernization and tradition. City confrontations of West of Michal Fulier and East of Matúš Zajac. The project will be represented at the fourth exhibition European Month of Photography in Berlin from 11/4/2010 to 11/29/2010. More exhibitions of this project are planned in various foreign galleries.
"Lost Balance" Photographic essay of Michal Fulier and Laco Maďar portrays the deep impact of this tragedy on the lives of people of Nižná Myšľa. Natural disaster chosen its cruel tax and hit the hearts of the people.
on June 9, 2010 at 5.30 pm in the Central European House of Photography in the open cultural dialogue presented to the general public its mission and artistic work of four photographers in the form of documentary photographs which bear the human message about person and affect the social issues of society. They express their views on these issues from different aspects. In a large public participation a pleasant atmosphere was created in which the pleasant presentation was structured as an open cultural interview with photography and about photography, with art and about art, with people and about people.

Citizen Activism is a non-governmental organization founded in 2011 by a group of youth from all Lebanon; CitiAct acquired the official recognition from the Ministry of Interior under the Notice and Factual Act Number 97. Source of Funding: USAID - OTI granted us for our first project.
Mission and Objectives

We seek to promote effective participation of 'citizen', citizenship, and human rights.
We believe our name expresses us the best; our concern is the marginalized group (such as youth, women, children) and their role – how we can empower them and enhance their role, which we believe that if we do so, we will be able to contribute to developing our communities and to putting citizenship, human rights and democracy values into practice…

Main Projects / Activities

Project Card
CitiAct First Project Carried
Title: “…And we met”
Duration: 9 Months (July 2011 – March 2012)
Target Groups: 45 youth (males and females); between 18 and 26 years old
Target Areas: 2 areas: (1) Sfeir – Hadath and (2) Chyah – Ein El Remmaneh
Funded by: OTI (Office of Transition Initiatives)
Project Objectives
The main objective of this project is to improve youth activism towards their communities throughout TOT training, awareness raising and joint community-service activities that respond to economic and social needs; focusing on 2 model areas: Sfeir – Hadath and Chyah – Ein El Remmaneh.
Specific Objectives:
Objective 1: Provide TOT trainings and awareness raising for at least 30 youth in Southern Suburb of Beirut
Objective 2: At least 30 youth aged between 18 to 26 years old will be mobilized and divided into two groups in Southern Suburb of Beirut
Objective 3: Identify and implement 8 community projects
About the Project
The project content lies under the umbrella of 2 values: citizenship and youth participation; its main axes are capacity building for a group of selected youth and community activities carried by the selected youth.
The project was officially launched on the 26th of September 2011 through a celebrative Iftar organized by CitiAct at Rotana Hotel in Hazmieh. The Iftar gathered social, religious, municipal figures and youth from the regions of Sfeir, Hadath, Chyah and Ein El Remmaneh.
45 persons aged between 18 and 26 years old (from the regions of Sfeir, Hadath, Chyah and Ein El Remmaneh) joined the project and declared their commitment to attend the whole trainings and meetings and to carry the implementation phase. The trainings tackled topics such as: citizenship and civil participation, conflict resolution, leadership, communication skills and social media. There are 2 remaining topics that the youth will attend: project management and photography.
Throughout the project and in parallel with the trainings, the youth were involved directly with the project team to carry the community activities. They have been identifying a list of activities in their neighborhoods that respond to their needs, thus implementing social, economical and recreational activities on a monthly base.
Currently the youth are discussing and preparing to carry another two joint community service projects that emphasize on building their committed activism towards developing their communities.
In the last phase of the project, we can say that we have faced difficulties and challenges, but what is more important is that we have sensed success and change; we, the project team and the youth, are motivated and devoted to complete this project and launch new ones.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Although we are newly founded organizations, but we are able till now to gather around us a group of committed youth from different backgrounds... We are able to share our experience of working in the suburbs of Beirut (marginalized areas) with the network of our country.
