General Information
BeFree Social Cooperative Against Violence and Discrimination was launched on February 27, 2007 to counter violence against women, gender-based discrimination, inequality and trafficking in human beings. To this end, BeFree provides services, advocacy, training, education, and outreach activities. BeFree is structured as a permanent “workshop” to develop and implement methodologies and practices of research, fieldwork, support, and assistance (legal, social, and psychological) to victims in a non-judgmental way. It operates with the conviction that victims cases represent living evidence of societal malfunctions which need to be addressed by the society as a whole and that demand to put the interests of the victims first in the respect, protection, and promotion of their human rights. BeFree is funded by government institutions 9at national and local levels), international organizations (UN Volountary Trust  Fund on Modern Forms of Slavery), and foundations (Opens Society Foundations and We World) through the adjudication of competitive grants. It is highly regarded and prominently consulted and featured by such institutions and the media as an indispensable interlocutor, and a source of expertise and excellence. Its permanent staff is composed of 21 members. BeFree also avails itself of a roster of consultants, including auditors and quality control specialists on an on-going basis. It is a member of of the European Women's Lobby and of the Inter-parlamentary Group on Human Trafficking. It is a member of the CEDAW NGOs platform and of the anti-trafficking campaign LasciateCIEntrare.
Mission and Objectives

BeFree’s objectives are the promotion and protection of women’s human rights, as well as the empowerment of both victims and protection actors through the provision of front-line services, research, advocacy and education. The cooperative aims at ensuring that gender rights are mainstreamed in policies and actions. BeFree works to change social perceptions of gender roles and dynamics in order to promote a culture of respect for diversity. It strives to promote protection for victims of human trafficking and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. To these ends, the cooperative regularly provides training courses to partners in government, educational institutions, civil society and the media.

Main Projects / Activities

BeFree runs four shelters in Central Italy: three for victims of violence against women and the fourth for victims of trafficking. It runs two help desks. The first (and only example in Italy) provides 24/7 counselling to victims of violence and is located within the emergency room of the hospital San Camillo Forlanini in Rome. The second is located within the Center of Identification and Expulsion of Rome where irregular migrants are detained. The cooperative's legal team assists victims and litigates cases on their behalf. BeFree promotes advocacy campaigns either on its own or in partnership with other organizations in civil society. It conducts research on the themes of its mandate and promotes recommendations stemming from this research with the government and international organizations (the UN, EU, Council of Europe, Organisations for Security Cooperation in Europe). It holds regular training courses for social operators, law enforcers, health specialists, academia, and other individuals from concerned civil society. It promotes gendere studies and culture through an annual summer school. It is regularly consulted by government institutions on the themes of violence against women, human trafficking and discrimination.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

BeFree can provide information and advocacy on the network's themes. It can facilitate contacts between network members and Italian partners. It can host events (conferences/lectures/ meetings) at the International House of Women in Rome --where BeFree is headquartered.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Since 2013, BeFree has developed an international projects capacity. As a result, its international outreach has increased. However, the cooperative would like to extend its network beyond its traditional partners and interlocutors and liaise with like-minded organizations and networks.

General Information

Leadership for Sustainable Development (LSD) is a Lebanese Non Government Organization was founded in 2013 to respond to the needs of marginalized people in Lebanon. When we say LSD, our sub conscience will highlight the drug but here, in the same concept of the name which follow the same addiction concept for a good social work towards a better society. If sustainable development means the insurance of the future generations on progress and evolution. The relationship between leadership and sustainable development is very important, because there is no development without leadership especially in the social, human and cultural dimension. LSD adopted a new three year strategic plan that will position its team to build on its past successes and address new issues. However, many people find themselves marginalized from public life, without the human rights provisions that are accorded to every human being.

Mission and Objectives

An integrated relation between leadership and sustainable development supports the different social, humanitarian and cultural aspects for individuals and the society as a whole. Thus, we at LSD work on developing leadership skills at the personal level in order to achieve a sustainable development between its three dimensions: environmental, social and economical. And taking into account the present needs without compromising the needs of the future generation. This development is based on advancement and building leadership abilities within individuals, in order to elevate their influence in their societies on the political and social level. Therefore these are our objectives: 1. Conducting leadership building trainings and workshops. 2. Social rehabilitation, encouraging youth and empowering women. 3. Facilitating conflict resolution within communities and organizations.  4. Encouraging intellectual and cultural exchange and spreading awareness in society.  5. Increase awareness between Lebanese to claim their rights. 6. Exchange expertise with relevant non-Lebanese organizations on    sustainable development issues. 7. Training of trainers. 8. Assisting the health and service fields. 9. Execute research studies on leadership and sustainable development and publishing them. 10. Providing consultancy in political, social and economic topics. 11. Organize and support projects related to improving the environment and preserving nature.

Main Projects / Activities

Our new strategic plan focuses our resources in several areas:  Changing the world! One leader at a time. Under this concept, LSD is providing the capacity building program for developing grassroots leaders, especially women and youth, who will mobilize their communities and civil society organizations to play an active role in building a culture of peace and dialogue.  Promoting Human Rights and Equal Citizenship for marginalized people in Lebanon, specially the youth in cooperation with local governments.  Creating spaces of dialogue and understanding for people of different religions, ethnicity and sects to break down barriers of mistrust and create bridges of peace. LSD focus our human resources for deeper impact that will create new alliances and networks as the power of civil society grows in Lebanon and the region to share our success stories and exchange best practices and experiences.

General Information
We are an informal group of representatives of various culture and academic institutions that has met in workshops and seminars and plan a joint EU-application in the Horizon 2020 program during 2017 to be able to run a long-term collaborative project and research. Each institution in the Think Tank Transbaltic network group has a separate budget. We have received grants from Nordic Culture Point and the Swedish Institute for the preparation. Involved in the project are Academies with specializations in spatial planning, architecture, migration and social science along with museums and art institutions. The first group of Think Tank Transbaltic was a partnership of more than twenty partners from harbour cities in all countries around the Baltic Sea. Since we are changing our project we are heading towards a partnership with institutions in countries situated by other Seas as well, the Mediterranean or the Atlantic coast.
Mission and Objectives

Think Tank Transbaltic (TTT) will establish an interdisciplinary collaboration to generate urban and regional development approaches by combining hard and soft professions, disciplines and cultural methods. The project will develop new methods for community development with artistic practices as a base through creative Think Tanks in cities e.g. joint international public productions of various sorts, experimental workshops and research. TTT will be focused on the inclusion of migrants’ experience and knowledge to a process of development of public space. It will be a research-driven project where participatory and interdisciplinary methods are used. Its driving force will be ideas of diversity as a resource. We prepare a new multiannual research project with interaction projects in public space.
TTT will compare experiences of the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) with those from other coastal regions, the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic coast.

Main Projects / Activities

Our joint project is under preparation.
Our process-blog http://thinktanktransbalticpilot.blogspot.se

The project will be based on an interdisciplinary collaboration of researchers, artists, architects, spatial planners, integration workers, educators etc. This is why it will assume research through practice. Its driving force will be ideas of diversity as a resource and non-normative/norm creative thinking. There will be various forms of practices used, e.g. site specific games, performance and theatre in the city space, exhibitions, creating films, interventions and installations in public space, workshops, working with non-human beings in public space, creating new experimental public space, group residencies etc. The research’s results will lead to creating new knowledge on the public space and the consequences of the re-creation – to redefining it.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

All partners have their specific networks in different public spheres where their voices are heard and seen through lectures, public art projects, research, workshops etc.  Our joint collaboration will reach out with visible projects in public space, museums, art institutions and academies.
Our last project reached 200 000 people in various art projects in untraditional public space and had more than 250 ´online visitors.
We are part of the Priority Area Culture group in the Baltic Sea Region Strategy and take part in their networking and information meetings where we also give presentations. Our project received a Flagship-status in the BSR by the European Commission. All Baltic partners benefit from this network.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

We would like to find partners interested to work on European issues regarding city planning, participation and migration to share experience and expertise.

General Information
The European Institute for Strategic Analysis and Policy Initiative (EIPISA) is a non-profit think tank specialising in precise, transparent information to understand the political, economic and social reality between Europe and the Middle East and North Africa. We bring respected people, from all over the world, who have dedicated their professional life to analysis and understanding of these issues.  Currently our sources of funding are private contributions but we aim to get European funding. Nevertheless we are in the European Parliament Register of Transparence. We are a recently based think tank in Brussels so we have not developped yet any but we are in process.
Mission and Objectives

EIPISA’s main mission is to provide analysis and discussion forums that are useful and relevant to the formulation of EU policy. As part of this mission we also act as an interface between European experts and decision-makers at all levels. EIPISA is a platform of experts, intellectuals and people who have a great knowledge of the reality in Europe and the Middle East, to provide clear, objective, transparent and easily accessible information to understand the political, economic, social and humanitarian situation in the Middle East and North Africa.
We present evidence-based precise and unbiased resource. We support the work and cooperation of all institutions who work with to and / or have a significant interest in issues relating to the Middle East to find permanent solutions. The activities of the EIPISA team are intended to improve the EU's analytical capacity and to facilitate the shaping of common approaches.

Main Projects / Activities

Our objective is to provide an infrastructure where experts, intellectuals, and political and economic personalities who have experience with the geostrategic challenge that define the political, economic and social structure in an increasingly globalised world.
By offering seminars, conferences, exhibitions and publications, we strive to build the bridges of understanding and mutual knowledge that will enable a fruitful cooperation for both the European Union and for the Mediterranean countries and the Middle East. We believe in our mission and we are dedicated to making it possible.
In the months that follow, we will strive to find solutions to the greatest challenges facing Europe and the Middle East: terrorism and radicalisation, how to bring ends the conflicts and facilitate democracy with the Arab Spring. We want to assist the countries of the European Union and the Middle East to develop their relations and how to ensure human rights and democracy is respected everywhere.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We believe that the Belgian network, as the whole Anna Lindh Foundation, will benefit from our inputs, as we are a think tank with a great infraestructure of diplomats, experts and intellectuals from Middle East and North Africa.
Is this great source of knowledge and expertise that we want to bring to Europe for creating platforms of dialogue, as the only way to find peace and stability in the region.
Being part of this network would be a strong asset for us, and that way we could, in partnership with other organisations, develop activities such as seminars or conferences with high-level profile experts.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

It is of the greatest interest for us to be part of this network as it would be, not only an opportunity to share efforts with those that share our goals of bringing peace and democracy to the Middle East, but a way for us to be recognized as members of one of the most important networks regarding multicultural dialogue all around the Mediterranean Sea.

Mission and Objectives

Mission
Maynooth University is internationally recognised for the quality and value of our research and scholarship, and our dedication and commitment to teaching and our students.
Part of the NUI and formally established as an autonomous university in 1997, Maynooth University traces its origins to the foundation of the Royal College of St. Patrick in 1795, drawing inspiration from a heritage that includes over 200 years of education and scholarship. The University is a place of lively contrasts. It is a modern institution, dynamic, rapidly-growing, research-led and engaged, yet grounded in historic academic strengths and scholarly traditions.
The humanities, social sciences and natural sciences form the academic and intellectual core of the University, complemented by strong departments and programmes in teacher education, computer science and electronic engineering, business and law.  Maynooth University has an international reputation for research in humanities; social and spatial sciences; mathematics, communication and computation; and  human health. This research connects directly with our teaching, and with wider societal needs through a very successful knowledge transfer office.  Maynooth University is very much an engaged university, making significant contributions to social, cultural and economic development at local, regional and national levels.
Maynooth University describes itself as “a university dedicated to people, ideas and culture, where we work together as a scholarly community to inquire and discover, to teach and learn, to create, conserve, disseminate and apply knowledge, and to engage with the problems and challenges that face modern society; through all these things in combination, we are central to innovation, economic growth, social development and cultural vibrancy,  and are essential to a free, open, equal, democratic and sustainable society.”
The University community comprises more than 11,000 students and  800 staff from more than 20 countries.  The institution has grown rapidly in recent years, but retains a student-centred and deeply collegial ethos.
Maynooth University has recently launched a new University Strategic Plan 2012-17, charting a clear and ambitious direction for the development of the University, including major enhancements in undergraduate and postgraduate education, focussed investment in research, further internationalisation, and deeper engagement with enterprise and the community.

Main Projects / Activities

Maynooth University is currently hosting several Marie Curie awards, including three Individual Fellowships (2 IEF, 1 IOF) and 2 ITNs.  Maynooth University is also home to 3 European Research Council Grants called The Programmable City (Prof. Rob Kitchin, ERC Advanced Grant), NEWDEALS (Prof. Seán O’Riain, ERC Starter Grant) (both in NIRSA) and CHRONHIB (Prof. David Stifter, ERC Consolidator Grant).  In addition, we are partners in H2020 research projects in Societal Challenges (4 projects) and Research Infrastructures

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

I have been a member of the ALF through Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, and am keen to continue to build the relationships and networks that we have cultivated over the last number of years. Maynooth University is particularly well positioned to engage with the ALF network given its inter-disciplinary ethos and commitment to community and social engagement. Maynooth University's existing networks and projects will contribute to the ALF mission in Ireland.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Applying on behalf of Maynooth University, I am keen to join the network because of the benefits that I have experienced through my involvement in MIC. It has been a terrific mechanism for bringing together a very diverse range of practitioners in Ireland, and also has been important in terms of learning about projects and exchanging ideas in the Mediterranean basin. I think Maynooth will benefit from the diversity of encounters that one has as part of both national and international networks, and that it will bring knowledge and experience that will make an important contribution to the ALF mission.
