General Information

WIFTM Belgium was founded in 2020 as an organisation to promote and work on gender equality in the television, film and media sector. Since we just started our resources and number of staff is limited, however, we expect it to grow on a rapid rate. Our sources of funding are private donations as well as government grants. Our partners are to be announced

Mission and Objectives

WIFTM Belgium supports and engages members from all over Belgium to grow, advance and support their careers and businesses through networking opportunities, mentorship, information sharing, professional development and events for its members and the public. Through these activities, we want to create an inclusive community that unites people in film, television and media, at all stages of their careers, and allows our WIFTM community to be a positive example for these sectors.

Main Projects / Activities

WIFTM Conference: A WIFTM conference is organized annually. During this congress national and international speakers are invited and all kinds of information sessions, screenings, activities and competitions take place. This is also the time of year to gather as many of our members as possible in one place and introduce them to each other. WIFTM Connect: At least one event is organized every quarter where we gather as many members as possible. Events are organized with a view to networking, giving advice and debating. WIFTM Legal: WIFTM Legal is a discreet, advisory body that you can contact free of charge for legal issues on various topics linked to our sector. WIFTM Database: In order to encourage more production houses, media companies and institutes to achieve a balanced gender balance, WIFTM will create a public database to which the contact details of all women active in the media sector (from directors to journalists) can be added voluntarily. In this way, all companies and institutes in the sector have a tool within reach to recruit more women so we are one step closer to that healthy balance. WIFTM content: WIFTM TV is our content platform where we will frequently produce and upload informative content in the form of tutorials, interviews, podcasts and live streams. All our content can be consulted at www.wiftm.be/content WIFTM Research: WIFTM Research is one of the foundations of our organization. Scientific research is required to bring come to action. Figures and research increase the journalistic value of our association. In addition, substantiated figures and expert research are the building blocks for change. This is especially the case within traditional institutions and politics. All our investigations and reports are published publicly. WIFTM Workshops: Every year we offer several young talents the opportunity to take an 8-week course of their choice at the renowned Los Angeles Film School and London Film School. WIFTM Space: The WIFTM hub is our initiative in which we offer workspaces and office spaces free of charge for starting female entrepreneurs, researcher and filmmakers. We provide various meeting rooms, a whole range of workshops and facility rooms. This creative hotbed is the ground zero for the next generation of strong women who will shape our sector to our ideals.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We can provide organisational support to other projects linked to gender equality. Our database of women working in the film, television and media sector can be consulted to find the right person to work on your project. Our research regarding gender equality in our domain will be published publically. We can promote other projects on our WIFTM Content channel and live events.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

WIFTM Belgium is a chapter of the Women In Film International network. Our goal is to not only work on gender equality locally but to bring the challenge to the international play. We strive for women to be represented, seen, treated and paid equally in all sectors around the world. To reach this goal we must bundle our forces and work together.

General Information

The Department for Cross Cultural and Regional Studies (ToRS) carries out research into language, culture, religion and society, mainly in countries outside Western Europe and the USA. Cross-cultural competencies and knowledge of the world’s great diversity are crucial in a globalised world – socially and culturally. ToRS’ mission is to provide insight into this diversity.

Research and teaching at the department examine the current state of affairs in the 21st century’s social and cultural hotspots, but draws on cultural heritage and historical perspectives that go all the way back to the hunter and gatherer communities, the first urban communities and the development of the first ancient civilizations in the Middle East, Asia and Central and South America. We can only understand our own time against the background of our cultural heritage.

Language skills and regional expertise form the basis for ToRS' work. Each society is studied on its own terms and through its own language, but based on the premise that cultures, religions and societies can never be understood as isolated units. Regional processes must always be seen in a wider context, transcending cultures, national borders and periods.

Mission and Objectives

ToRS’ primary objective is to contribute to developing the knowledge society by increasing our understanding of cultural history, religious matters and social relations in a world whose regions are at the same time both closely interlinked and far away from each other. Through research, communication and education, ToRS’ aim is to make society smarter, both about itself and about others.

Main Projects / Activities

The Middle East section in ToRS: Research into Middle Eastern languages and society is an area of study rooted in four of the major languages spoken in the Middle East: Arabic (the Arab countries and North Africa), Hebrew (Israel), Persian (Iran) and Turkish (Turkey).

Geographically, the area covers a region stretching from Morocco in western North Africa, across the central Middle East, to Iran and Central Asia in the east. Research is conducted into historical and sociological topics, Islam, the media and the Islamic public sphere, urban studies, anthropological subjects, literature and languages.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

The Middle Eastern languages and society Program in the department of Cross Cultural and Regional Studies in the University of Copenhagen is committed to the study of language, culture, history and politics in the Middle East next to promotion of dialogue between cultures. We encourage our students to take part in community development and contribute back to society through volunteering, awareness and disseminating knowledge.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

STF works on the international, regional and national level. We have strong national and regional networks. Through our membership in the Anna Lindh foundation, we look forward to acting as a networking and facilitating platform for the Network in our countries. In the past few years, we have also seen an increased interest in and appreciation of the role the arts and culture can play in the area of socio-economic and political development in the Arabic speaking Middle East. We also look forward to partnerships and collaborations with sectors across the wider civil society and not only the arts and culture sector. We look forward to sharing our experience and models of work and developing multi-sectoral/disciplinary programs.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

1. We find a lot of intersections between Anna Lindh's vision and our theory of change. We believe in equitable, free and just societies in the Arabic speaking Middle East region. Democracy is a central component to this. We also believe that democracy does not start and end in the ballot boxes. For democracy to be meaningful and lead to sustainable change, changes must be made at the level of consciousness and awareness raising of the communities as well as at the level of policies. Our interventions, therefore, are in line with the concepts behind Anna Lindh's objectives of empowering young voices; influencing policies and policy makers and thereby creating a movement based on a new consciousness and legal and structural frameworks.
2. By joining the Anna Lindh networks, we will be able to collaborate with a wider network of partners. Engaging with the wider civil society has been a central component of our strategy since 2016. Our figures speak for themselves with an average of 200 collaborations with civil society organisations in the four focus countries.
3. The current funding situation and the challenges posed globally since the 2008 financial crisis, compounded exponentially by the recent COVID-19 situation means that as civil society sectors, we need to maximise our resources. the best way to do so is through collaborative projects where we can share our knowledge and human capital in innovative, more impactful ways.
4. Related to point 3, being part of the network will also increase our own capacities, exposure and opportunities to learn from others, therefore increasing prospects for our own sustainability.
