General Information

The Portuguese-Greek Cultural Association “Parafonia” is a non-profit organization based in Lisbon. The Administrative Bodies of the Association are in total 9 individuals. We don’t have a fix budgetary resource every year. Our income resources come from our memberships and from the admission fees of our events. So far we haven’t received any funding, apart from some material donations that have been distributed to our members in some lotteries/competitions, as prizes. Our activities vary from dance, theatre, culinary workshops to dinners for our community, literary events and photo exhibitions. Since the beginning, the Embassy of Greece in Lisbon has been encouraging our projects and supporting some events on an institutional level. We have collaborated also with the Film Festival “Olhares de Mediterrâneo”, as Program and also as Financial Partner and with Instituto Camões, as it was the host of one of our bigger events, a literary tribute to Nikos Kazantzakis.

Mission and Objectives

The Portuguese-Greek Cultural Association “Parafonia” is a non-profit organization based in Lisbon. It was founded in November 2016, after the initiative of a group of Greek residents in the Portuguese capital, with the aim of disseminating various aspects of the Greek culture in Portugal and bringing the two peoples closer together. “Parafonia´s” mission is an inclusive society, where, under the cultural pretext we will build a dialogue and interaction between Greece and Portugal, but other cultures as well. We aim to create actions that could contribute to the familiarization of the locals with the language, culture and the Greek way of life, through cultural exchanges and also to establish a channel of communication between the competent authorities of both countries (local authorities, public services, embassies, cultural organizations and associations).

Main Projects / Activities

- Film Festival “Olhares de Mediterrâneo” based in Lisbon (2018, 2019, 2021) as Financial Partner, sponsoring the translation of several films. - Theatre and Movement Workshops: having as a starting point the female characters of the Greek ancient drama, an interactive journey that ends in the modern day theatre. - Ethnomusicological event: a musical conversation with guests the Portuguese singer-songwriter Amelia Muge and the Greek musician Michales Lukovikas. - A literary tribute to the Greek writer, poet and philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis (“60 years after his loss”), under the auspices of the Greek Embassy in Lisbon and in collaboration with the Institut Camões. - Photo Exhibition “Mediterranean Shots, a Greek Triptych”: three Greek photographers (Achilleas Tilegrafos, Maria Bourbou and Pinelopi Triantafyllou) with three views of the Mediterranean landscape and daily life. - Workshops of Greek traditional Dances - Cultural Culinary workshops

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

“Parafonia” is the cultural association that will give an added value to the spectrum of diversity and cultural pluralism of the ALF members, since it is the only element, so far, whose identity is strictly related to the aspects of Greek culture, always in an open dialogue with the Portuguese, which is the host culture. The contribution of “Parafonia” within this rich network can be more practically met in the potential collaborations of its members that can be initiated during the annual meetings and the participation to ALF Open Calls that resonate to “Parafonia´s” mission and that can enrich the cultural offer of the city of Lisbon.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

We have a common goal with the Anna Lindh Foundation and the other members and that is the inclusive society and the creation of a dynamic dialogue to promote inter-cultural exchange. We believe that there is a big potential in joining the ALF network, considering the proximity to other cultural associations that we will have and the possibilities for joint projects, the opportunities that we hope will be created from the Foundation, in which we can participate accordingly, the visibility of our work and the various lessons we will learn along this experience.

The Fight against Islamophobia in Catalonia: A Challenge to Coexistence

Islamophobia is a phenomenon based on assigning people a single identity, their Muslim faith, when faith is only one of the many aspects that can make up our identity. Although it is deeply rooted in history and has a global nature, in recent decades Islamophobia has experienced a rise in Europe as a result of the growing visibility of migration. Thus, discourses have developed that attribute Islam with a series of problems, conflicts and situations involving people of the Muslim faith.
