Ghetto Six, an Ethnography-based Art Project

Image
Ghetto Six

The 6 de Maio is a self-built neighbourhood located in Damaia, council of Amadora, close to Lisbon. Since its origins in the 1970s it houses a community of mostly Cape Verdean origins. Stigmatized for reasons of public disorder and drug trafficking, and targeted therefore by violent police interventions, the neighbourhood is a place of memory and identity for its residents. The 6 de Maio is being demolished and will be entirely dismantled by 2015, while its population is being relocated, according to a scheme of urban sanitation recently applied to other spontaneous urbanizations in the greater Lisbon area.

Based on research on the life in the neighbourhood, EBANOCollective created Ghetto Six, an ethnography-based art installation inspired by the life stories of the residents and by the contradictions and violence of postcolonial Portugal and Schengen Europe. It employs the remains of the houses that have already been demolished (doors, shelves, aluminium plates, wood, etc.) as supports for the inscription of a “portrait” of the neighbourhood itself, using mixed media including photography and painting. At the same time an experiment in visual ethnography and a tribute to the social life of a neighbourhood doomed to disappearance, Ghetto Six intends to evoke the instability but also of the creativity and aesthetics of a way of life.

The installation was moved to the 6 de Maio neighbourhood in early 2013, and will there remain indefinitely, becoming actual part of the built environment until the final destruction of the whole area. The remains will finally go back to their context of origin, transformed into visual elements of social critique within the urban space itself.

EBANOCollective is an artistic and curatorial collective that proposes to carry out site-specific projects and urban interventions through art supported by ethnographic research, and one of the members of Anna Lindh Foundation's Portuguese Network. Through the collaboration of artists and social scientists, EBANO develops participatory projects of public art tackling local community issues and larger social and urban questions.

Mission and Objectives

The GTO Lx is the Theatre of the Oppressed Group of Lisbon, a non governmental organization engaged in stimulating active and conscious participation of the citizens in the construction of society.
We develop community intervention projects in critical neighbourhoods working directly with the population in order to provoke an awareness process about their realities and encouraging individual empowerment.
Our methodology incentives the beneficiaries to create Forum Theatre plays based on their issues and personal realities. These plays are then presented to the whole community, creating a common ground where shared problems are discussed and solutions explored, promoting social empowerment.

Main Projects / Activities

.“DRK”- Forum Theatre group composed by young people of Zambujal and Cova da Moura neighbourhoods, two infamous boroughs in the outskirts of Lisbon. This group is currently working autonomously, using Forum Theatre to intervene in their communities and acting as multipliers of the methodology, training new groups in the Forum Theatre technique.
They are the result of the DiverCidade Project, an EQUAL initiative, in which the GTO Lx is responsible for community empowerment through Forum Theatre
“R2” An adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, Richard II, performed by young people of Casal dos Machados, Zambujal and Cova da Moura and presented in the National Theatre D. Maria II in Lisbon.
This project was the result of a collaboration between theatre director Nuno Cardoso and GTO Lx. This work allowed these young people to participate in a professional theatre production.
“RVA!” A Forum Theatre group composed by young people from the Vale da Amoreira. This neighbourhood was considered by the government as a critical and priority area.
The group is currently working with GTO LX and has already created two Forum Theatre plays.
Besides this projects, we also have forum theatre projects with disabled and elderly people.

General Information
JACC - Jazz ao Centro Clube is a portuguese Non for Profit Cultural Association. It was officially constituted on April 30 th 2003, in the city of Coimbra. Altough many of it's projects are of a national scope, it has a very strong local basis in Coimbra, where it runs a vibrant music venue called Salão Brazil. In the last fifteen years, Jazz ao Centro Clube evolved from a mission centered in the promotion of musical culture - with a special emphasis on jazz and exploratory music – to a larger field of activity involving the questioning of the role of artistic practices in community development. JACC's foundational projects still form the basis of i's identity, closely connected to music: jazz.pt (online magazine), JACC Records and Festival Jazz ao Centro – Encontros Internacionais de Jazz de Coimbra.
Mission and Objectives

As a Non for Profit Cultural Association, JACC has a Board of Directors (11 in total) which conducts the affairs of the Association during 3 year terms.
In 2020, JACC will have 3 full time emplyees and 2 other with close work ties (although not with a work contract like the first three). It also will receive two internships (in partnership with the National Institute for Emplyment).
From an overall budget of nearly 400.000,00€,  70.000,00€ are state support (from the General Directorate for the Arts) and 60.000,00€ from the Municipality of Coimbra.
In 2020 will produce 4 festivals, mantain three editorial projects (JACC Records, Cena Jovem Jazz.pt and jazz.pt), manage a independent cultural centre that hosts more than 100 events per year and support the creative activity of more than 60 artists.
Our Educational Service will promote about 50 activities, including the Coimbra's Historic Centre Digital Archive and the programmes connected with the UNESCO Club, dedicated to community involvement, democracy and civic participation and the promotion of Humam Rights.

These our some of our main projects:

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

In the last few years we have been making an effort to joint platforms and networks (more or less formal) with the main objective to share experiences and good practices.
That willingness to move forward collectivelly and to learn from partners in similar conditions has brought good results and has helped to sustain processes of transformation to our structure.
We are now capable of contributing with a rich experience in the artistic domain and to collaborate in meaninfull projects that build bridges between teh arts and larger themes connected with civic participation and human rights.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

We identified that ALF network brings together actors questioning the same things as us and we really feel the necessity of being in contact with other organizations that can help us connect the dots of our multiple interests in the arts as an instrument of social transformation.
