General Information

ECOS is a multisectoral social cooperative, registered in January 2010, established by professional youth workers and educators from diverse professional sectors and active at local, national and European levels. The social objectives of ECOS are the promotion of social integration and transformation, particularly by combating social exclusion and discrimination, promoting equal access to opportunities, encouraging dialogue and cooperation between different social actors of civil society and promoting social innovation and entrepreneurship by using approaches of non-formal education, intercultural learning, education on human rights, citizenship and democratic participation and sustainable local and global development.

ECOS is constituted by experienced youth workers with diverse academic backgrounds in fields such as social education, sociology, psychology, economics, sports and law. Our main expertise is in the development of participatory-based projects that can involve young people, schools, civil society, organizations and decision-makers. Due to the extensive experience of cooperants and staff, ECOS is also an expert organization on training and capacity building of professionals, organizations, and public and private institutions. Our main activities are:

  1. Creation of spaces for structured dialogue, cooperation and collective construction among diverse social, business and institutional actors;
  2. Promotion, design, implementation and evaluation of playful, educational, social, cultural and sustainable development projects, in formal and non-formal spaces, through non-formal and human rights education, in a way that contributes to lifelong learning;
  3. Development of the organizations' capacity for efficient management of their resources and projects through training and new technologies of information and communication;
  4. Design, monitor, support, assessment and consultancy to individuals, organizations, municipalities and institutions regarding strategic development, educational programmes and social intervention projects;
  5. Promotion, recognition and validation of methodologies that contribute to personal and social transformation.
Mission and Objectives

In the society we live in, there are dominant narratives that promote the fragmentation of our relationships with each other, with the environment and with ourselves. Therefore, what drives us is the need to awaken a new conscience through processes of collective learning and construction that promote a more just, resilient and harmonious society. Our main objectives are:

  • To contribute to the promotion, recognition and valorization of methodologies that can enhance learning, personal development and social transformation;
  • To contribute to social inclusion and strengthening of social cohesion, towards community development.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

ECOS has a significant experience in networking and gathering different stakeholders in participatory-based projects promoting the development of civil society, cooperation and dialogue. We believe that working in the south of Portugal, with the regional network of municipalities and organisations we will be able to bring new partners and new cooperation possibilities for this network. Our trainers, educators and project managers can also support the development of new projects, bring the network closer to the young people's needs and priorities and develop tools to cooperate with others to approach common challenges.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

ECOS is a pioneer in enhancing, promoting and developing EuroMed cooperation in the southern region of Portugal. Our motivation is based on knowledge, experiences and feelings, which gives us a certainty that due to the historical background of the region, we should promote more opportunities for young people and other actors to cooperate within the Mediterranean region. We believe that within Anna Lindh Foundation Network we will be able to create new projects and partnerships and also open new possibilities to cooperate and support the development of the region.

Ethno Portugal Orchestra

Image
Ethno

From August 4 to 13, the Ethno Portugal residency took place in Arraiolos, a meeting with 31 young musicians from 14 different nationalities: India, Turkey, Italy, Israel, Ukraine, Portugal, France, Korea, Denmark, Belgium, Brazil, New Zealand, Germany and Algeria.

Ethno is a program run by Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI) and in Portugal is produced by Associação PédeXumbo. It's a unique program aimed at young musicians who want to explore folk and traditional music. The 10-day artistic residency began last Friday in the village of Arraiolos and offers participating musicians the opportunity to learn and teach, in an individual and personalized way, music from different cultures around the world, sharing what they learn with different audiences and keeping musical traditions alive and fresh.

Juan de la Fuente, Teresa Campos, Denys Stetsenko, Tiago Candal and Inês Lapa were once again the musical mentors for this edition. They accompanied the orchestra in the preparation of the repertoire and three final concerts, which happened from the 10th to the 12th of August in Arraiolos, Fundão and Arganil, respectively.

Ethno Portugal is produced by PédeXumbo, which is one of the members of Anna Lindh Foundation's Portuguese Network. PédeXumbo has been promoting traditional music and dance since 1998. A professional team is dedicated to the recovery of these cultural practices, through recordings, co-productions, artistic creation, research, training of trainers and informal teaching for all ages. More than perpetuating relics, PédeXumbo aims to revive social habits of living music, reproducing traditional dances participated in by new generations who drink from old practices.

European Heritage Hub

Image
Meeting

Europa Nostra and a group of relevant partners in which the Centro Nacional de Cultura (National Culture Center) is included have been selected for funding from the European Union for the implementation of a pilot project establishing a European Heritage Hub. This ambitious project, which will run until Spring 2025, will bring together diverse expertise and resources to mobilize and strengthen the cultural heritage movement in Europe, supporting heritage professionals and volunteers in sharing and acquiring the knowledge needed to strengthen their resilience and help them adapt to the triple transformation of our society - digital, environmental and social.

The project will connect the networks of all partners through innovative tools and creative advocacy and outreach campaigns. Ultimately, it will reach out to citizens at large, with a particular focus on empowering and engaging the younger generation of students and heritage professionals to continue the legacies of both. It will build on the legacies of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 and the European Year of Youth 2022 and contribute to the European Year of Skills in 2023.

The CNC, in collaboration with the Lisbon City Council, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage, associated partners of the project, will be responsible for the implementation of a Cultural Heritage Hub in Lisbon.

The National Culture Center is a cultural association of public utility created on the 13th of May 1945 by a group of monarchists and Catholics opposed to the regime. It was conceived as a "club of intellectuals" for the debate of ideas with the aim of "defending a free culture". In the 21st century, the CNC reinforces its identity matrix, valuing historical memory, promoting contemporary creation and strengthening the debate on culture and active citizenship.
