Hisory: At the beginning of the 20th century, during a period of great difficulties, a group of Egyptian Armenian intellectuals, understanding the urgent need to create a strong non-political organization capable of extending instant aid to all Armenians, met together and set the foundations of our important Organization. - On 15 April 1906, the group, led by Boghos Nubar Pasha, met on Easter day, at the Nubar mansion in Cairo, to sign the founding charter of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU). The first few years of AGBU were devoted primarily to the development of the organizational machinery and the extension of grants and subsidies to a number of schools and orphanages. In 1907, AGBU’s first branch was founded in Alexandria, followed by the Manchester & Boston branches. The start of the massacres of Armenians in Adana (Cilicia) in 1909, was the first major challenge for the young Benevolent Union, which rushed in by sending aid to the people of the stricken cities and villages.

General Information
Artellewa Art Space was conceived to bring art to the underserved community of Ard El Lewa, a densely populated informal area located between the two great squatter settlements of Cairo, Imbaba and Boulak al- Dakrour. Artellewa is a vehicle for constant interrelation between the people of Ard El Lewa and art. It is also an essential means of connecting Ard El Lewa to the cultural life of Cairo. Artellewa is an artist-run organization. It is currently in transition from an individual artist’s project to a full-fledged arts center. It operates with a three-person administrative board, alongside an advisory board of artists, teachers, and scholars. It recently secured a grant from Egypt’s Al-Mawred Al-Thaqafy for operational costs, and continues to secure project funds from various organizations. It has received project funding from the Swiss Arts Council Prohelvetia, the Ford Foundation, and the Embassy of Spain in Cairo, among others.
Mission and Objectives

Artellewa maintains as its core principle the social impact of art. We understand art as dialogue, rather than as an isolated activity aimed at production. Therefore, Artellewa curates exhibitions and events that are concerned with the local environment and local issues, and brings artists-in-residence from abroad to work on projects that engage with the community. It is an art center around which a creative community is built, including Egyptian and foreign artists.
Artellewa realizes the people of Ard El Lewa as a new audience for local, regional, and foreign artists. Artellewa provides the people of Ard El Lewa with the opportunity to participate in art, and connects this informal area to Cairene cultural life by hosting public events. Artellewa provides a unique opportunity for foreign artists to interact with the community and environment of Ard El Lewa through artist residencies.

Main Projects / Activities

(1) ARTIST-LED WORKSHOPS offered free of cost, to four discrete audiences:
(a) children in Ard El Lewa
(b) teenagers in Ard El Lewa
(c) aspiring young Egyptian artists
(d) emerging Egyptian artists
(2) EXHIBITIONS held in the Shop, a small workshop open to the street. In addition to exhibiting the work of established and emerging artists from Egypt and abroad, each year Artellewa holds the first exhibition of at least one young Egyptian artist.
(3) ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM brings foreign artists to interact with the people of Ard El Lewa, to research and produce artworks, to show their work in the Shop, and to build
networks with the Cairo arts community.
(4) EVENTS on the Rooftop, bringing the Cairene public and the arts community to an informal neighborhood, including film screenings, meet the artist presentations, and music performances.
(5) Other SPECIAL PROJECTS.

• Motivates and utilizes the ideas, talents and creativity of young artists
• Introduces their products in a professional way
• Supports production phases and marketing
Artkhana was established in Alexandria to address the low standard of independent animation production all over Egypt, as well as to broaden and enrich the base of cultural life in Egypt by establishing an art house for animation films, documentaries and short films in a non-centralized city like Cairo.
• To enrich media programming for both children and adults with films, cartoons and serial programs which are generated by local Egyptian realities and issues.
• To reflect the changes and challenges of globalization and raise awareness on issues e.g. child labor, smoking and drugs.

Our mission will be carried out through funding of projects, rental of equipment and facilities, organizing workshops, and the creation of a database/network of individuals and organizations working in the field. The main activities are:

5. Supporting individuals to cooperate and form teams.
6. Providing post-production services such as sound editing, mixing, subtitling, applying for festivals, printing and advertising.
Training workshops: a series of workshops will take place this summer 2009. Each workshop will be from 5 to 10 days long.
