General Information

PROJA Institut has an executive and a supervisory board, presided by a president. It had 2 part time employees in 2022, with a budget of close to 15.000 eur, mainly received through small donations and own services. Proja also had been partner on a EU project in Palestine, with another Slovenian NGO - Humanitas and is occasionally working also with Apis and Vitaa, also from Slovenia. Proja is member of the Voice of the people, a movement for democracy and civil rights in Slovenia. Through our senior staff, we are cooperating with Maydan - a movement working for the concept of transnational Mediterranean citizenship, registered in Italy.
We organize workshops, exchanges and arts/cross-cultural events at our location in the village on Slovenian/Italian border.

Mission and Objectives

PROJA aims to explore and present the potential of each individual, as well as groups of likeminded people, for our common future. It is environmentally sensitive and strives to protect the human as well as other beings' rights and looks for alternative models of lifestyles, in tune with the other and with ourselves.
The main objectives are to offer spaces of encounter of different cultures and to present and develop, through various means, audio-visual, story telling, activism as well as advocacy for rights, the good practices that we believe will bring a better understanding between the people and more equality of opportunity worldwide.

Main Projects / Activities

From 2017 on, we implemented the "Walk for Palestine" project and were partners, in 2018 and 2019, in the EU project - "Bringing Culture to Marginalized Palestinians", together with the Palestinian Vision from Palestine and the association Humanitas from Slovenia. Between 2017 and 2023, most importantly - the MED Land project took place - which explores the Mediterranean area, its identity and stories, through video and photo production.
In 2022, the institute participated in several photographic events and publications of works, in cooperation with the Vitaa association in the preparation of short informational films. One of the most important events was the exhibition on Venice, which explains this place as the cradle of the new world through the photographs of Bojan Brecelj and the sketches of Marko Pogačnik. In cooperation with SAZU and the Italian Cultural Institute, we also presented this project in a book. In 2022, the institute also participated in the Voice of the People movement, where it contributed audio-visual content (Voice of the People on the Ground) and worked to promote active electoral participation, especially in local elections. We also managed a small project for psychosocial assistance to girls in Palestine and employed one person from Palestine. In the months of February to May, the institute hosted 7 international volunteers who participated in the construction of spaces for public events as well as in cultivating the land and growing fruit.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Proja and its staff has years of experience and references in intercultural education as well as in arts and culture events. Few NGOs in Slovenia are active in the more rural areas and we have an advantage to be located in the border area, also an area of migration trails and in any case rich in different cultures. The expertise of PROJA's president, Bojan Brecelj, a renown photographer and story teller, and Eva Marn, director, a human rights lawyer and activists, with years of experience in development and humanitarian work, can be, in itself, a guarantee for useful contributions.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

The Mediterranean is its specific geographis focus of PROJA, please see https://medland.life/, and as explained above, our objective is intercultural exchange and awareness. We are looking forward to cooperating with other organizations, within the ALF network and with the similar objectives as ours.

International development cooperation to combat ageism!

Image
Photo from a meeting inside office

The Institute Circle, a member of the Anna Lindh Foundation in Slovenia, started a mentoring program in Plav and Gusinje in Montenegro in February, to raise awareness about Dementia.

This international development cooperation is in partnership between the Institute Circle in Slovenia and local partners in Montenegro, Izviđačka četa Prokletije - Plaare and Udruzenje Impuls

The Institute Circle and Udruzenje Impuls carry out this mentoring program within the framework of the project "Protection of the right to dignified ageing and dementia prevention", funded by the European Union and the Ministrstvo za zunanje zadeve RS / Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

We believe in the power of international development cooperation in combating all forms of discrimination, including ageism; we look forward to having insights on further development within this promising program!

International Youth Day 2023

Image
Youth day - EPEKA

The EPEKA association organized the event the day before the official date of the International Youth Day. The event was held on Maribor Island (Mariborski otok), which belongs to Natura 2000; nature conservation network of the European Union and one of the world's largest protected areas. In 1999, the United Nations declared August 12 as International Youth Day and devoted it to discussing various issues related to young people and to reminding them of their important role in society.

This year's theme of International Youth Day is Green knowledge for young people: On the way to a sustainable world, and in the EPEKA Association,  this year's event was named "Green knowledge for young people: On the way to a sustainable world".

Today, the world is embarking on the path of the green transition. The transition to an environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly world is not only crucial for responding to the global climate crisis, but also for achieving the goals of sustainable development. A successful transition to a greener world will depend on the development of green knowledge and skills of the population. Green skills are knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes that are necessary for living in a sustainable and resource-efficient society, its development and support.”

Did you hear about our InterTalks debates of books and beyond?

Every month our "InterTalks" group which consists of members who identify as migrants who have an association with the MENA region and residents of Slovenia meets to discuss and debate a book that is written by brilliant writers who are migrants, identify as women, and are associated with the MENA region.

On 20 of January, we discussed and debated the book "Headscarves and Hymens" by Mona Eltehawe, a freelance Journalist and an activist from Egypt who is an advocate for the rights of women and LGBTQIA+. In 2010 the Anna Lindh Foundation awarded her the "Special Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Journalism".

Here you may watch our previous book debate and stay tuned to join our upcoming ones.

Invitation to join an online focus group: the EU Gender Action Plan III from the perspective of CSOs in the southern Mediterranean region

Image
11th of July at 17.00 CEST via Zoom

اللغة العربية فيما يلي

We invite you for an online focus group where we exchange and learn together about the third EU Gender Action Plan (GAP III) and the EU's renewed partnership with the Southern Neighborhood - A new agenda for the Mediterranean from the perspective of Civil Society Organizations and our role as partners for gender equality and sustainable development in the southern Mediterranean region. We focus on integrating the GAP III into the new agenda for the Mediterranean from theory to practice.

The EU's latest Gender Action Plan (GAP III) aims to integrate intersectional, gender transformative, and human rights-based approaches into all its external actions with an ambition that 85% of its external actions by 2025 will include gender equality as a significant goal or principle.

Through desk and participatory research, Reka Si, a research institute in Slovenia, in cooperation with Cultural Club Ali Belhouane in Tunisia, aim to examine the practical challenges, opportunities, and recommendations from the perspective of Civil Society Organizations, CSOs in the Mediterranean region on implementing the pillars and approaches of GAP III through the EU's renewed partnership with the Southern Neighborhood - A new agenda for the Mediterranean, which includes policy dialogue and programming.

Through participatory research, we aim to highlight challenges, opportunities, and concrete recommendations from CSOs involved in policy dialogue or programming based in the Mediterranean region while relating their work to the southern Mediterranean region.

The third EU Gender Action Plan (GAP III) that covers 2021 to 2025 is now unlocking and guiding new funds for CSOs working on women's political empowerment and participation. In 2021, the EU introduced several new regional strategies that formally promised upgraded civil society and good governance support. These include the document providing for a "Renewed Partnership with the Southern Neighborhood: A New Agenda for the Mediterranean".

This online focus group is primarily for CSOs who benefited or benefit from EU funding programmes under the framework of policy dialogue and programming and the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP), and that focus on gender equality as a goal or principle for sustainable development.

This participatory research is enabled by the Anna Lindh Foundation for EuroMed dialogue through the ALF Knowledge for Action, K4A.

The meeting will take place via the Zoom platform on the 11th of July, starting at 17.00 Central European Summer Time.

To receive the link for the meeting, please register here
