Main Projects / Activities

Research informs teaching throughout the curriculum delivery in and out of the classroom as well as through the co- and extra-curricular activities taking place in each School and/or programme or at University level. Programme curriculum is frequently reviewed and updated according to the latest research findings in the field. Results of externally funded projects, outputs, publications, events (round tables, conferences, trainings, seminars, workshops, and surveys), CPD and public outreach events are embedded directly and/or indirectly in the course of teaching and learning, as learning activities and/or resources. Research is contextualised and research informed teaching activities are embedded in face-to-face or interactive discussions (e.g. during seminar or workshops, discussions of online materials), role plays (e.g. arguing, debating, mooting), collaborative writing activities (e.g. blog writing, group oral presentations), reflection (e.g. PDP, portfolio, workbook), and high use of technologies (e.g. interactive seminars, computer lab sessions, adobe connect, digital library training, research methodology and methods session).

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

UCLan Cyprus is a private university in Cyprus with links to its parent university in the UK. Its researchers are involved in cutting edge research in the fields of Science, Business and Law. The Cyprus Network will be able to tap in the expertise of the University's academics and facilitate their collaboration with the other Network partners. The ALF Network provides an opportunity to academics to share views and interact with other institutions within Cypriot civil society. This opens doors for collaboration for research projects and initiatives, while it also expands the potential reach and impact of any projects that are organised by the University and its academics. Finally, the Cyprus Network has organised/will be organising events that could be practically beneficial to our members of staff, that as members to the ALF Network, will be able to participate in.

General Information

UG is registreted as a non for profit company under the national Ministry of Commerce in Cyprus. IT is run by a board of Directors and has about 2 -3 staff employed. The NGO relies mainly on EUropean and national funding for its actions.   The Board of Directors and working team shares expertise in architecture, urban design & planning, landscape design, economics,  cultural project management, as well as a love for innovation and the drive for bringing about positive change. UG carries an extensive collaboration with artists, academics, NGOs, municipalities, youth groups,  and cultural institutions, amongst others. Most of our projects have a tangible result i.e an exhibition or event in public space, a research tat will end up in a book publication , a design workshop with concrete output resulting in an intervention in public space etc.

Mission and Objectives

Urban Gorillas is a non-profit organisation run by a multi-disciplinary team ofurban enthusiasts who envision healthy, creative and socially inclusive cities. It was founded in 2013 and has been very active since in advoacating for sustainbable cities.  Urban Gorillas contributes to sustainable urban living by enabling projects and actions that bring new energy and instigate change in city spaces and communities. The team has a vivid interest to transform public spaces into lively, innovative and inclusive hubs, to cultivate civil society and to impact policies. This is achieved by artistic interventions in urban spaces, community engagement, youth education, activism and research into new technologies, and architectural-social designs that can improve urban living.  The organisation shares expertise in arts and architecture, urban design and planning, landscape design, environmental engineering, economics, communications, cultural project management, as well as a love for innovation.

Main Projects / Activities

URBAN GORILLAS (UG) is an NGO which undertakes creative urban interventions to foster sustainable living, using mixed-artistic practices, social action and community engagement. UG’s activities include the creation of digital and non-digital platforms to facilitate discussions, exchange of views with citizens concerning community-related problems.  UG investigate solutions for a sustainable urban future through research-oriented design and creation of new social processes. Using diverse approaches such as co-creating and co-curating with communities and their own methodology of ‘adopt-an-artist’(http://urbangorillas.org/uncategorized/pame-kaimakli-adopt-an-artist), UG enhance the dynamics of public interactions and invest in cultural heritage.  Our biggest project to date, the Green Urban Lab was the result of cross sectoral cooperation (universities, municipalities, private companies, international experts) along with participatory tools for citizen’s involvement. A series of public art interventions took place in important cultural heritage sites, involving actors form the wider public sector while raising interest of actors from the private sector. This was the first attempt to raise awareness on public spaces as a commondemocratic platform and was done by the activation of underutilized public spaces through cultural actions and community engagement.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We believe that UG has the unique expertise with its innovative tools of connecting the public using cultural and artistic practises.  In addition our main focus in public spaces and our belief that arts and culture should be offered and presented to the wider public to the unsuspected passerby free cost, offers a fresh perspective to the network in adopting aritistic and culture for the society. We wish to share our expertise with the network in Cyprus in an atttempt to examine ways that arts can strengthen the Cypriot society.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

We would like to be part of a larger European (and beyond) family as we belief that we can go further if we work together with partners. Throughout our work we believe and acourage collaborations, and apply transverals learning and exchane techniquew eith our partners. We think that the ALF Network offers the ideal ground where we can expand our work, share, exchange, learn and ACT with one another.

General Information

Visual Voices is a non-profit organization based in Nicosia, Cyprus. There are two full time staff in Cyprus with an internationally based board of directors and group of technical advisors. In addition to the organization members, Visual Voices has established a network of 41 collaborating organizations in Europe, Asia, SE Asia and the greater MENA region.  In the first year of operations, Visual Voices has not had budgetary resources available.  Funding is sought from international institutions (UN, EU, USAID, etc.), national funding from the government of Cyprus, private foundations and small grants programs.  Visual Voices is currently implementing three projects in Cyprus 1) a Visual Voices initiative funded by Civic Space (funded by EU) 2) local implementation of Plural+ Film Contest screenings in partnership with UNAOC and UN Migration (IOM), and 3) collaboration with PeacePlayers Cyprus on arts-based programs (funded by EU and British High Commission in Cyprus).

Mission and Objectives

The Visual Voices mission is to enable youth artists from communities affected by violent conflict to artistically advocate for peace both within their own communities and internationally. In doing so, we aim to challenge conflict narratives and help strengthen peace narratives. To materialize this mission we have been developing our own network of collaborating organizations and professional artists around the world. Our main objectives include building the capacity of local youth for positive civic participation through artistic expression, introducing youth voices that embrace a culture of peace into the peacebuilding discourse and contributing to positive peace in communities affected by violent conflict.

Main Projects / Activities

Visual Voices is a newly established organization that is developing projects in Cyprus and internationally in collaboration with partner organizations. Activities include research, art residencies, peace education workshops and campaigning. Our methodology focuses on integrating peace education into artist residencies for youth artists from communities affected by violent conflict. The pilot project is currently taking place in Nicosia, Cyprus.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Visual Voices is motivated to contribute to the Cyprus network in many ways. We are committed to attending and supporting network events, helping organize events, partner with other international networks and collaborate with local organizations on projects.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Visual Voices would be proud to join the ALF Network because we share many of the same ideals and value the role of civil society organizations in positive social change. We are an organization that recognizes the importance for dialogue and the inclusion of youth voices, which are both key elements of our organizational mission. We also believe that transnational civil society connections are crucial to making positive social change through enhanced understanding and cooperation. We recognize that being part of the ALF network will allow us to connect with, learn from and share with other organizations both in Cyprus and internationally. We are very interested in expanding our network and finding common ground with other organizations for future opportunities to collaborate.
