The structure of our team is horizontal as we are working together toward all goals. We are research oriented with five members of staff working on our projects. We have received grants from the US Embassy, the Youth Makerspace Larnaka and have applied to various Erasmus projects with partners across Europe. Other partners with whom we have collaborated are: UNESCO MIL Alliance, Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, EKOME - National Centre for Audiovisual Media and Communication, Critical Literacy Lab, Cypriot Enterprise Link, and Psaroloco Media Literacy Project. Our workshops and projects are designed with the understanding that engagement and critique of the media is empowering. Our main focus is media literacy and since 2019 we have led almost ten events related to the topics of misinformation, data literacy, algorithms, gamification, etc. Our MediaLearn site offers free educational resources to teachers and educators that source from our activities and projects.
Media What is a non-profit organisation made up of a team of educators and researchers experienced in designing learning experiences that encourage critical thinking through media activities. Mission: Media What is committed to promoting media education through participatory media production activities that empower community voices and enhance media literacy and critical thinking. Vision: Media What aspires to be the leading media education hub in Cyprus, and to influence education policy-making through its media education practices, projects and research. Our workshops and projects are designed with the understanding that engagement and critique of the media is empowering. We believe that developing media literacy is essential to navigating a world that is rich in information and media messages and this is important for students and teachers. We are dedicated to supporting youth in developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes that can enable them to be creative in their use of media, while remaining conscious and critical citizens online and offline.
Our more recent project is JOUREDIS, on which we collaborate with the Cyprus University of Technology, and aims to support journalists in their efforts to resist misinformation through the use of digital journalism tools. Our workshop series, will develop the skills needed to engage with mobile journalism, wirting for social media, live blogging and fact-checking. Earlier this year we coordinated a speaker series called 'Mediatised Portraits of Women' and asked: What does it mean to be a woman in Cyprus in 2021? The project centred on the value of media literacy to address challenges of every woman’s empowerment and is part of the POWER project (Portraits Of Women's Empowered Representations), funded by the US Embassy Cyprus (https://www.mediawhat.org/en/projects/power). Additionally, in collaboration with Youth Makerspace Larnaka and Youth Board Cyprus, we offered three paid artist residencies on the theme of "Making Womanhood". We also just completed an other project called 'Use Your Head' (Με Τον Νου Σου!) that explores misinformation spread. For this project we build an interactive game in collaboration with the award-winning artist Yiota Demetriou. The project is funded by Arts Council England and uses Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) tech, enabling the player, wearing the BCI headset, to interact with our co-written story without the click of a button or a hand-held controller, but merely by concentrating on what they would like to do when asked about how they would like to advance the narrative. (https://www.mediawhat.org/en/projects/mtns).
We are expert educational professionals, researchers and workshop facilitators. We believe that our skills and expertise in media literacy can add to the network's aspirations to build more inclusive, empathetic and resilient societies, to fight growing mistrust and polarisation. Media literacy is a fundamental set of competencies. You can’t function in today’s media-rich reality without having at least some basic knowledge and skills about the media and technology. But media literacy is a muscle that needs to be strengthened, especially when the boundaries of what we call media and information are constantly changing online. We believe that when young people learn to decode, critique and question media they can take ownership of their media consumption and can feel more confident to engage in media practices that amplify their voices. Media What aims to spark that journey into motion, by engaging youth in activities that challenge them to reflect on their media practices and to imagine themselves as storytellers, activists or historians producing media products within an increasingly complex digital media environment.
We would like to offer insights and support to the network's efforts to build a culture based on dialogue and exchange and help create and popularise alternative narratives to fight extremist discourses and radicalisations. We will do that by collaborating and working with the network's partners to transform the region's relationship to media products and engaging in activities that promote critical thinking and active digital citizenship. Our strength is in developing activities and initiatives that can be integrated in different learning environments. Finally, we would like to create the spaces for community members to tell their stories through digital storytelling and inspire the next generation of critically engaged citizens while also influencing policy-making across the region.

Our organization, MindSpin, is an R&D organization based in Cyprus. Currently, we have a team of three workers and five volunteers, and we work with various partners to coordinate and promote S&T activities in Cyprus. Our budgetary resources vary from year to year depending on the projects we undertake, but we are committed to ensuring the efficient use of our resources to achieve our goals. We source our funding from various entities, including the European Union, national governments, and private companies. We believe that innovation and collaboration are essential for social development, and we engage in concrete projects, exchanges, seminars, and training programs that promote digital literacy, cybersecurity, and the integration of disadvantaged groups into society. Our main partners include universities, research institutes, NGOs, and public authorities. By working closely with these partners, we are able to leverage our expertise and resources to create long-term impact in our community and beyond.
The mission of MindSpin is to promote new areas of Science & Technology and play the role of a nodal department for organizing, coordinating, and promoting S&T activities in Cyprus. Our organization is committed to empowering communities and promoting social stability by providing opportunities for participation in various programs and events and increasing civic engagement and social inclusion. Our objectives are: To promote digital literacy and education, especially among vulnerable groups such as low-skilled adults, migrants, and refugees. To develop innovative digital tools and platforms that can be used to facilitate learning and skills development. To promote cybersecurity and digital safety, particularly in the context of gender-based violence and discrimination. To facilitate the integration of disadvantaged groups into society by providing them with opportunities for personal and professional development. To foster collaboration among different stakeholders, including universities, research institutes, NGOs, and public authorities, to create a more effective and sustainable approach to promoting social development. Overall, our mission and objectives reflect our commitment to using innovation and collaboration to promote social development and empower individuals and communities to achieve their full potential.
During our participation in European projects, we focused on systematically creating new digital tools and training modules to support the acquisition of skills, especially of people with a low level of skills, to enhance their key competencies and adapt to the new digital age. Our work expanded rapidly during COVID ’19 pandemic since a huge number of people had to develop basic digital skills to adapt to the labour market transitions. At the same time, the schools were using online platforms for their courses causing stress to the students, the teachers and the parents. Furthermore, we are focusing on gender equality, by allowing women to participate in our education and training activities and to develop entrepreneurial skills. Our organization is currently involved in training development for personal data protection regarding AI, big data, mass biometric surveillance and cybersecurity. Furthermore, we addressed the need for equal inclusion of people 65+, especially in terms of digital illiteracy, depression, dementia etc. Our projects aim to foster the participation of the elders in the community and to promote active ageing. Moreover, MindSpin focused on tackling the raising number of hate speech attacks on immigrants and other minorities that have raised over the last years. As more and more people have moved online, individuals are inclined toward racism, misogyny, or homophobia. In 2021, MindSpin team has created an open-source API ‘’Hate speech analyser’’ for organisations to effectively analyse hate speech in social media. https://github.com/papargyri/Hate-Speech-Detection Meanwhile, MindSpin works towards the mitigation of the dissemination of fake news, i.e., news with intentionally false information, which brings significant negative effects to society. This requires multi-source information such as news content, social context, and dynamic information as well as social awareness of the accuracy of information. Our current activities are: • Exploration of social contexts such as user engagements and social behaviours. • Understanding and development of comprehensive datasets which contain news content, social context, and dynamic information could facilitate fake news propagation, detection and mitigation • Cooperation in the research initiative FakeNewsNet which focuses on fake news studies on social media. • Training of individuals and organisations on fake news characteristics and critical thinking.
MindSpin can contribute to the Network in Cyprus by leveraging our expertise and resources to support the Anna Lindh Foundation's mission and objectives. Specifically, we can contribute to the Network in the following ways: Collaboration: MindSpin can collaborate with the Anna Lindh Foundation and other members of the Network on joint initiatives and projects that align with our respective missions and objectives. By working together, we can leverage our collective expertise and resources to create more significant impact in our community and beyond. Expertise: MindSpin can provide our expertise and experience in the areas of digital literacy, cybersecurity, and social inclusion to support the work of the Anna Lindh Foundation and other members of the Network. We can participate in seminars, training programs, and workshops to share our knowledge and learn from others. Outreach: MindSpin can use our networks and platforms to raise awareness of the Anna Lindh Foundation and its initiatives, as well as to promote the values of intercultural dialogue, social cohesion, and mutual understanding. We can engage with our beneficiaries, partners, and stakeholders to promote the Network and encourage participation in its activities. Overall, we believe that our commitment to innovation, collaboration, and social development aligns with the goals of the Anna Lindh Foundation and the Network. We are excited about the opportunity to contribute to the Network and work with like-minded organizations to create a more sustainable and inclusive future.
MindSpin wants to join the Anna Lindh Foundation (ALF) Network because we believe that our mission and objectives align with the goals of the Network. The NGDO Platform ‘Development’, represents 25 NGOs and has as members the 2 constituent platforms on the island (one in the Greek Cypriot community and one in the Turkish Cypriot community). Its staff consists of: 1 part-time, 1 communications intern and 1 volunteer.
As far as budgetary costs are concerned, in 2013 the budget was approximately 20.000 EUR and in 2012 it was 240.000 EUR (due to the EU presidency).
The main sources of funding are: TRIALOG V, CONCORD subcontract for AidWatch and membership fees. The main expenses are on Human Resources, Project related expenses and CONCORD membership fees.
The ‘Development’ is involved in Development Cooperation and Development Educational Programs mainly coordinated via the TRIALOG V project and CONCORD.
The main Missions of the Platform are :
•working for the post -2015 framework
•Linking members to the Platform
•Revising the platform strategy of which is mainly aims to promote sustainability, contextualization of global issues, the shape of policies and decisions and the promotion of Cyprus as a Regional Hub for MENA region.
During 2014 the main events which were organized were some successful roundtables on sustainable development, the successful completion of the Presidency Project , and the recognition of the Platform as a legitimate actor by the government.
The ‘Development’ is currently undertaking two projects funded by the European Union. The first one is CONCORD which is the European NGDO federation and brings together all national platforms under a common strategy. The second one is Trialog which is specifically focused on EU 13 members .
The NGDO Platform ‘Development’ is a member of CYINDEP, which a member of the European NGO Confederation for Relief and Development, (CONCORD). CYINDEP is the national platform of development NGOs which represents Cyprus at the European Union level and thus can strengthen the Network. Moreover, CYINDEP has long been active in trying to bring the two communities together and is trying to capture the specific needs and requests of the two civil societies. CYINDEP represents 25 NGOs and has as members the 2 constituent platforms on the island (one in the Greek Cypriot community and one in the Turkish Cypriot community).
The Anna Lindh foundation acts as a network of networks of the 35 civil societies forming the Euro-Mediterranean partnership. Thus, Cyprus should be considered as a new member for the network for it is a Mediterranean country, an EU member state and a country which has been known for its problematic political situation, being formed by divided communities. One of the ‘Development’s main goals is to promote itself as a Regional Hub for MENA region. Thus during this attempt, strong affiliations with the ALF network could act as a powerful tool for Cyprus. Also, the platform will be largely benefited from any future collaboration with ALF since it will be enjoying its trainings, coordination meetings, direct organization of events, visibility actions and the foundation can acts as a facilitator between the different members of the ‘Development’.
