General Information

Etz Hayyim is a not-for-profit organisation with an international 12-member Board of Trustees and a staff of five (one full-time position), complimented by volunteers, among them successive long-term volunteers (one year each) from the Austrian organisation Gedenkdienst (i.e., the Holocaust Memorial Service).
Etz Hayyim’s operating budget comprises about EUR 100,000 annually. Funding comes from grants (foundations, EU programs, embassies in Greece) and private donations; it does not receive funds from Greek public sources or any corporations.
Etz Hayyim organises concrete projects in the fields of history, culture and heritage (exhibitions and participatory art projects, publications, guided tours, concerts etc.); these projects are based on its ongoing research and educational programmes. Projects are organised with local (e.g. Young Citizens of the World, Chania) and international partners (e.g. the Heritage Contact Zone consortium; https://heritagecontactzone.com/). Etz Hayyim also organises seminars for pupils and educators on Cretan Jewish history, which also address interreligious questions.

Mission and Objectives

Etz Hayyim Synagogue is the last remaining witness to 2,300 years of Jewish history on Crete and a testimony to the island’s multi-faith past at the intersection between Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Our projects and daily practices aim at making a contribution towards a more nuanced and inclusive understanding of the multivocal past and present of the Eastern Mediterranean:
Etz Hayyim is, on the one hand, an active synagogue which is open to everyone thus reviving the inclusive approach of the Ancient synagogue of the Hellenistic period. On the other hand, our historical, cultural and educational activities focus on the local and general Greek public in an attempt to broaden the narrative about Greek history and self-perception by highlighting Greece’s multicultural past in its Mediterranean setting.
At the same time, our activities and projects also aim at our many international visitors (about 30,000 per year), Jewish and non-Jewish alike, to further knowledge about and appreciation for the long and rich history of the Greek Jewish communities, which also most Jewish visitors are unaware of. The story of these native, Greek-speaking Jews, the Romaniotes, is an example of cross-cultural exchange and mutual cultural enrichment throughout the history of the Mediterranean. This story can contribute to promoting mutual appreciation, respect and understanding in today’s increasingly polarized and divided world.

Main Projects / Activities

Etz Hayyim’s founding director defined it as a “place of prayer, recollection and reconciliation.” The site functions as an inclusive religious space, a historic site, a venue for cultural events and a research and educational institution. Activities include inter-religious/inter-faith projects, concerts, readings and lectures reflecting the Eastern Mediterranean heritage, guided tours for about 30,000 visitors every year, and exhibitions on intercultural themes and (Cretan) Jewish history, as well as lectures for the general public and seminars for local schools.
Two examples of our most recent projects illustrate how Etz Hayyim explores and adds an alternative voice to the understanding of the history and present-day society of Hania and Greece:
In October 2019, Etz Hayyim hosted the exhibition “Parallel Points of View” as part of the EU program Heritage Contact Zone (HCZ) project. The exhibition (https://heritagecontactzone.com/hania) presented ten alternative perspectives on the history and society of Crete ranging from the mediaeval Emirate of Crete, the Ottoman period and today’s Muslim presence to Romaniote and Sephardi Jewish views, and a women’s perspective along with views from the Roma, LGBTQ+, expatriate and refugee communities. The exhibition was co-created by a curating artist in participatory workshops with local residents representing those groups.
In January 2021, Etz Hayyim published a map for a walking tour through the historic Jewish quarter of Hania (in view of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, we added an online virtual tour version of the walking tour: http://www.etz-hayyim-hania.org/the-jews-of-crete/hania-jewish-quarter-…). The map gives new, more tangible meaning to the name “Evraïkí”, which is still applied today to the area around Etz Hayyim Synagogue, and is used in everyday parlance, albeit with erased, or very little, meaning or connotation for locals. There is no memory of what life in this centuries-old Jewish neighborhood was like, or a sense of what the historic quarter could mean for today’s Hania. In keeping with the participatory character of the HCZ project, we added an interactive element to the Evraiki map: the “Mapping Hania” project invites the wider public to share their personal mental map of the city and will eventually create a multilayered mosaic of personal maps of the town and potentially start a conversation of what we do, could or maybe should not miss to see.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We feel that we can contribute to the Network by both sharing our previous experiences and by bringing these experiences and tested methods to the table for developing new collaborative projects with other Network members in Greece:
As an institution we promote religious tolerance by providing an open and welcoming space for meeting and exchange, by teaching about the common roots and values of the three monotheistic religions, and by promoting a multicultural and multivocal approach for viewing the past and present. We are actively engaged in public humanities projects and have worked with both groups of youth and members of the general public.
Our experience in working with contested heritage and promoting a more inclusive narrative about Greece’s past and present society, along with our daily practice as an inclusive space and a contact zone, can serve as an interesting example and learning opportunity for other small or emerging heritage organisations in Greece, facing similar challenges as we do.
Equally, we have experience with participatory arts projects as a form of citizen engagement and educational outreach programmes, which promote an inclusive view both of religions and society in general. Insights and conclusions from this experience of working with contested heritage and various forms of heritage presentation were put together in a Toolkit by the Heritage Contact Zone consortium (https://heritagecontactzone.com/toolkit/), in which Etz Hayyim is a partner.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

We feel that our work and vision fit well with those of the Anna Lindh Foundation and therefore hope to connect with like-minded institutions in order to learn from other ALF Network members, find new potential collaborators, and promote agendas of social inclusion and historical awareness.
We feel that we particularly fit within the ALF priorities pertaining to Human Rights/Vulnerable Social Groups, Research, and Arts and Culture. To this end, we are concerned with:
a. public memory and perceptions of history beyond the ones established traditionally in the process of nation-state making (i.e., the mono-cultural national identity),
b. promoting and fostering of the history and current trajectories of minority groups/collectivities in Greek society, with Jewish identity as our model case study, albeit embracing all pertinent groups or cultures. For us, it is of the utmost importance to promote unexplored, silenced, or erased histories of groups/collectivities within the context of the Greek nation-state process, as well as the political/historical conditions in which the above took place, hence to provide a rightful place for them in the Greek (and European) public sphere,
c. high-level scholarly research in order to establish Etz Hayyim as an academic point of reference for the promotion of a more comprehensive perception of history, and for social awareness of less-dominant/less-hegemonic worldviews,
d. local and national impact though applied projects: educational outreach in local schools, apprenticeships (e.g. for university students), local and international volunteer programs, promotion and institutionalization of events pertaining to Shoah memory, co-creative participatory arts projects etc.

General Information

Noucmas is an artist-run non-profit cultural organization based in the neighborhood of Kypseli in Athens, Greece. Founded in 2019, Noucmas offers artists studios and an exhibition space for cultural events. The organization has three core members, Katerina Charou, Olga Souri and Vincent Meyrignac and operates on a non-profit basis. In addition to its permanent team, Noucmas collaborates frequently with various artists, cultural managers, curators and researchers on a project basis. The overall yearly budget for 2022 was around 20.000 euros. The organization's budget is mainly derived from self-funding, donations, and project grants from various sources including European private foundations or the Ministry of Culture in Greece. Noucmas mainly implements visual art exhibitions as well as film projections, concerts, talks and workshops. We developed a wide network of independent cultural spaces and collectives in Athens, and all over Greece, as well as in Albania, Hungary, Serbia, Turkey, France and Germany.

Mission and Objectives

Noucmas' three main goals are to empower the young Athenian artistic community, to remain in a constant dialogue with the neighborhood, and to promote international artistic and cultural exchanges . Noucmas is committed to addressing social and political issues, such as gender equality, sustainability of artists, urban transformation, minority issues among other thematics. We believe visual art allows us to treat those thematics more profoundly because it necessitates a step back from the mainstream public discourse. We try to demystify the individualistic function of artists and encourage collaboration with other artists and art spaces. We always organize group shows to promote collaboration as we value the critical conversations that an art event can generate in the public.
Lastly, we try to engage with neighboring countries which are geographically and culturally closer to Greece but there are less artistic connections such as Turkey the Balkan region and Eastern Europe. We value establishing links with those regions and promote a conception of art that is not reduced to Greece and Western Europe.
Noucmas also collaborates frequently with other organizations questioning centralized approaches in contemporary art

Main Projects / Activities

Up until now we have produced and presented in our space 12 exhibitions, one concert, two residency, two screenings, numerous workshops for children, talks and roundtables. In 2020 and 2021, we took part in the VAHA program phase 1 where we collaborated with a performance art space (1927) and a bookshop (O Meteoritis) in Kypseli. Together we created the project ‘The Words We Don’t Have’ including three roundtables and a podcast having as a thematic our neighborhood and the independent art spaces. In 2021 and 2022 for VAHA phase 2, we collaborated with independent spaces from Tirana and Diyarbakir for the project 'Concrete Contract’. This phase included traveling to each other's cities and producing exhibitions, talks, discussions, screenings and workshops.
In April 2022, we were invited by U10 art space in Belgrade to organize an exhibition. We curated an exhibition including two Noucmas members and two young artists recently graduated from the Athens School of Fine Art.
A group exhibition of female artists and writers took place in October 2022. Along with the exhibition a publication/visual essay was made. This exhibition was funded by the Ministry of Culture in Greece.

In December our annual ‘Christmas Print Show’ exhibition takes place. Every year we host this exhibition where we invite artists from our neighborhood and around Athens to create prints in any form (digital, silk-screen, etching, stencil etc.) The prints are available to purchase and the benefits go directly to the artists.

In April 2023, London-based sculptor Francis Olvez-Wilshaw will join Noucmas to work with our team and create an exhibition that will highlight the previous function of the space, which was a wood workshop that made furniture. Francis will work with our team to create furniture sculptures.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We have a unique perspective on the cultural landscape of Greece and are able to connect with other cultural organizations all over the country to foster collaboration and exchange. We are really well connected with the young artists here and we can advise artistic partners for different projects. We are also working on creating different ways to connect with the independent cultural scene and civil society organizations. We have extensive connections with organizations in Europe and beyond, which we can leverage to promote ethics we have in common with the Anna Lindh Network and to foster greater understanding and appreciation for the diversity of cultures and perspectives in the Mediterranean region.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

We are excited to join the Anna Lindh Network and to contribute to its mission of promoting intercultural dialogue and understanding in the Mediterranean region. As an organization that is committed to promoting cross-cultural exchange and dialogue through the arts, we believe that the values of the network align closely with our own. We are eager to participate in network events and initiatives, and to share our experiences and insights with other member organizations. We also believe that our focus on promoting emerging artists and addressing important social and political issues will make a valuable contribution to the network. We look forward to collaborating with other member organizations. In fact, with Anadolu Kültür, who is also a member of the Anna Lindh network from Turkey, we developed an artistic mobility program for independent art spaces and artists based in Greece and Turkey, and we plan to kick start this project focusing on the Aegean very soon.

Main Projects / Activities

Musical traditions of Greece, the Balkans and the Mediterranean, and their contemporary expressions

The idea started in the summer of 2020 in Thessaloniki, in response to the need to create a community of musical expression and creation that will form a key reference point for the cultural, educational and research ecosystem of the city.

The cultural diversity of Thessaloniki is an indisputable part of its identity. The city, as a crossroads, may serve both as a passage and a permanent home for people of different backgrounds who carry and leave traces of their culture, shaping and transforming its contemporary cultural mosaic. History, socio-political events, different habits, trends and ideas interact and merge. Music is the witness of all these changes and social fermentation.

olipoli enters the alleys and neighborhoods of the city, gets inspired by its multicultural wealth and gives space to its expression. Its team organizes group workshops for adults and children, seminars, lectures, educational programs, open rehearsals, concerts and festivals, and undertakes the production of musical and artistic activities, establishing a network of musicians, artists, academics, students, organizations and anyone interested in the art of music.

Focusing on the cultivation of music performance and listening to music, as well as the production of artistic, educational and research work, olipoli promotes and strengthens the cooperation and coexistence of different communities and organizations of Thessaloniki, creating focal points of expression within the city.

General Information
The organisation, consists of 30 active members( volunteers and youth workers) and its main operational body is a 3-memeber board Council. Its main sources come from yearly contribution of members and friends, and ad hoc funders such as Youth in Action program, local authorities (perfecture, region snd municipalities), businesses (mainly media) and being beneficiaries of implementation of projects enrolled under eu programms, interreg iii f.i.. Up to this date, the NGO has implemented actions under three main campains, and we have started creating a network of youth initiatives among greek, bulgarian and turkish organisations.
Mission and Objectives

Youth NGO "Opt in! Youth of Thrace for Europe" is a group of young people living in the region of Thrace, in North-Eastern Greece, bound by the common belief that fresh ideas can make the difference and improve our daily life.
The group met back in 2008, and started its always innovative actions the same year, having as vision the development of an active, earth-friendly local society, open to everyone and inspired by the common values of humanity.
Our working methods include boosting creativity and artistic expression of young people, promoting shared european values and the added value European Union offers to our life, protecting and improving environment and natural sources, making the access to public life and information easy to all and empowering democratic institutions and values.

Main Projects / Activities

Our actions concentrate in three main campains. branches.
1.We help planet Earth, all together"
The environmental branch of our group. Started its actions during Earth Hour 2009, where all day long activities made citizens of Alexandroupolis, for the first time to commonly express their concerns about climate change and discuss for solutions, through innovative and grassroots activities.
The best is yet to come through actions all over Thrace.
2.Next Door Europe"
Starting from the simple remark that Europe lives next door which, however, is not directly perceptible, we take action, armed with cameras and pens as to record every single sign of presence of the politics and the institutions of the European Union in the area and meet worker and beneficiaries of European Union’s activities. One almanac of concerns and visions of the locals for Europe is destined to reach the European Parliament
A "Youth in Action" funded project apporaching the European Idea and European institutions to young people.
3."Beyond ourselves"
Having in mind that a human life is in danger, while you can do something to save or improve it, is unhuman. Our group tries to promote tha value of solidarity in all aspects of social life in practice, starting by contributing to the Blood Donors of Evros campaign. Networks and common actions are currently being set .
