International Youth Centre Villa Elba in Kokkola, Finland hosted a short-term ESC (European Solidarity Corps) volunteering project called "Summer for Success".
During the project in june 2023 10 volunteers from Italy, Austria, Ukraine, Norway, France and Finland carried out summer camps that were open to both local and refugee children. Children spent their time together doing traditional summer camp activities such as playing, singing, swimming and dancing. Multicultural camp is easy and simple way to bring together children from different cultures. Through games and activities it is easier for the children to get to know each other. These shared experiences often lead to long-lasting friendships.
Volunteers planned and led different kinds of workshops and activities and together with the staff of Villa Elba ensured a safe atmosphere for the campers. Over 50 kids participated in these camps and the volunteers managed to create safe and welcoming atmosphere for participants.
During the project volunteers had meetings with a mentor who helped with recognition of their learning outcomes. Here are some learning outcomes that they mentioned:
"Working with kids in general is reflection in personal growth and you can learn so much only by watching. It is very important to be open-minded, listen to other opinions and to respect everybody."
"I deepened my understanding of different cultures and developed the ability to adapt to new situations. I engaged in reflection regarding my goals and motivation for participating in the project."
"My entrepreneurial skills grew the most during this time. It started with very small things, like making a meal and cleaning plan. But there were also tasks like organising the camp, preparing games and creating a time schedule to get everything done."
"We provided assistance to children in reading, writing, and communication to improve their skills and confidence. Working with children helped me change my attitude towards my native language and learn more about other languages through games and communication with the children."
"We were in contact with different cultures on a daily basis and often exchanged ideas and found many differences but also similarities. I also noticed that you shouldn't have prejudices."
Villa Elba provides high quality youth work for all young people. They offer variety of short-term ESC team projects on different topics each year.

The Finnish Somalia Network (FSN) is an ideologically, politically and religiously independent umbrella organization and co-operative body for organizations that conduct or plan to conduct development cooperation projects in Somalia. FSN was founded in 2004 and registered in 2009. It currently employs 4 people and has 9 board members. It has an annual budget of approximately 300,000 euros deriving funding from membership fees, grants, state aid and fundraising. FSN executes development cooperation projects in different sectors and areas in Somalia with its member organizations and offers its member organizations peer support, training and advice in the form of seminars, consultations and information service. FSN also publishes an electronic, trilingual Afrikan Sarvi – Horn of Africa Journal to bring developmental issues of the region to the attention of the wider audience. More recently, the Network has started a volunteer program for immigrant background youth.
The Finnish Somalia Network (FSN) is an ideologically, politically and religiously independent umbrella organization and co-operative body for organizations that conduct or plan to conduct development cooperation projects in Somalia. It executes development cooperation projects in different sectors and provides training to strengthen the capacity of its member organisations. Doing so it relieves the pressures the civil society faces in Somalia, and contributes to peacebuilding and development in the country. FSN is well-known and trusted expert among funders, media and other partners.
FSN is currently engaged in two environmental projects that target desertification, one of the root causes of the current migration flows. The first project began in 2012 and with its positive results another project was launched two years later. These project have been successful not only in environmental terms, but they have been able to generate cooperation between actors coming from different parts of the region that have previously experienced challenges in working together. Another long term project the FSN has been committed to is the electronic journal, Afrikan Sarvi - the Horn of Africa. The journal caters the wider audience bringing academic news and studies from the region to their attention. More recently FSN has began developing a volunteer program for immigrant background youth in Finland to fully integrate them to the Finnish society and to improve their societal skills and employment possibilities. Also, the Network is constantly preparing new development cooperation projects with organization partners as well as developing business cooperation.
As an umbrella organisation we have an excellent and enthusiastic network through which we can distribute information and knowledge. Also, we bring our own expertise to the benefit of the ALF community.
Tackling the root causes of illegal migration, radicalism and other challenges the Mediterranean and European community is currently facing is very important in order to solve or at least alleviate the problems. As many of our members are in fact diaspora organisations as well as active in development cooperation, we feel we have a lot to offer in these current topics.

The Federation of Finland-Israel Associations with its 12 chapters around Finland is the largest traditional Israel-friendship association in Finland.
The Federation is politically non-partisan and non-religious.
Sources of funding: membership fees, in addition occasionally donations for projects
Since its inception in 1954, the Federation has dedicated to promoting Israel and her society including culture, education, tourism, science & technology, business, religion etc.

K.-A. Fagerholm Award: In 2018 the Federation founded the K.-A. Fagerholm Award, according to the founder and first chairman (1954-1976) of the Finland-Israel Association, Karl-August Fagerholm. Mr. Fagerholm was one of the leading social-democratic politicians in 1930-1966, and served three times as Finland’s prime minister and as the Speaker of the Parliament for 16 years.
Our 12 chapters are organizing local events, lectures etc.
We have regular contacts to organisations and individuals in Israel so our network can be useful also for ALF
