General Information
The Fondazione Orestiadi continues the cultural activities first begun in 1968 when leading italian and international artists were summoned to rebuild the little town of Gibellina, following devastation by earthquake and lend a hand in its profound reconstruction as an extraordinary home to works of art of all kinds. The Foundation is a little 10 employees people structure, although with many different collaborators. The Foundation features the participation of representatives from the regional and provincial authorities (the Government of Sicily, the Government of Trapani and the Municipality of Gibellina), even it collaborates with local administrations and cultural associations. The budgetary resources come primarily from the regional financial contribution and they amount up to almost 600,000 €. The Foundation operates in different cultural fields, through international or national projects, academic exchanges, international workshops, laboratories of art, and stages the “Orestiadi di Gibellina”, a summer festival of theatre, music, poetry and visual arts.
Mission and Objectives

The mission of the Foundation is to recover the historical and cultural traditions common to all the people of the Mediterranean bassin, using art and culture as a sign of unity and peace.
To encourage dialogue, research, and exchange between artists from different cultures.

Main Projects / Activities

The Foundation sponsors and produces events in the sectors of theatre, visual arts, music and poetry, and sponsors scientific, publishing and professional training activities.
In 1996, the Foundation founded the “Museo delle Trame Mediterranee” (Mediterranean Roots Museum) for the collection and display of objects of decorative art (fabrics, jewellery, ceramics, costume, archaeological findings, art installations, sculpture and paintings, etc.) from numerous Mediterranean nations in testimony of the fact that above and beyond differences in history, culture and religion, clear signs still remain of the common roots shared by all the nations in the Mediterranean basin.
The Foundation activity primarily concerns the relations with the south mediterranean areas.
That’s why the headquarters of the Orestiadi are located even at Tunis, at Dar Bach Hamba, an ancient building inside the downtown (the Medina), which hosts a permanent exhibition organised along the guidelines of the "Museo delle Trame del Mediterraneo" and frequent cultural activities.
