Abstract

People between the lines – Handbook on migration for (future) journalists focuses on the development of a critical approach in the media treatment of topics related to migration, migrants and the coexistence of majorities and so-called new minorities. It offers a new perspective on traditional theoretical journalistic concepts of agenda-setting, discourse, framing, gatekeeping and ethics, which it places in the context of migration issues with an emphasis on the situation in the EU and in the Czech Republic, Estonia and Slovakia. It deals with the definition of basic terms associated with migration and presents the main findings from the field of migration studies, all with regard to the context of journalistic practice. Based on the principles of the E–U–R (evocation–awareness–reflection) method, it encourages readers to become aware of their own position and limitations in their journalistic work. The manual also offers practical tips for conducting an interview or working with sources. The handbook is primarily intended for students of journalism and novice journalists, but it can also become a source of inspiration for experienced editors.
