In his report Our Common Agenda, UN Secretary-General António Guterres sent a wake-up call to UN Member States. Under the slogan “breakdown or breakthrough”, he proposed a Summit of the Future, which he described as “a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reinvigorate global action, recommit to fundamental principles, and further develop the frameworks of multilateralism so they are fit for the future”.

The Summit took place on 22 and 23 September 2024 in New York. In a rapidly evolving global landscape, it played an important role in reaffirming the Charter of the United Nations; reinvigorating multilateralism and recalibrating multilateral approaches; boosting implementation of existing commitments; agreeing on concrete solutions to challenges; and restoring trust among Member States.

At the Summit, Member States adopted a ‘Pact for the Future’ that includes a Global Digital Compact outlining guiding principles for managing the Internet, Artificial Intelligence and data, and a Declaration on Future Generations.

Held only a few days after the Summit of the Future, the panel discussion will seek to build upon the momentum generated. It will review and analyze the event’s main takeaways and delve deeper into the practical aspects of fostering enhanced multilateral cooperation.
