General Information

MitOst enables activities and programmes which foster cultural exchange, active citizenship, social cohesion and sustainable urban and rural development – beyond cultural, sectoral or linguistic borders. As a members association, we have more than 1.400 members in more than 40 countries where we are active in Europe and its neighbouring regions (MENA region, Turkey, Russia, Caucasus) as well as in Central Asia and China. In our headquarter in Berlin around 45 staff members work in different programs and projects with a yearly budget of more than 5mio Euro. Our main funding partners include the Robert Bosch Stiftung, Stiftung Mercator, the EU, the European Cultural Foundation as well as the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. In all projects and programs local partners from different countries are involved.

Mission and Objectives

As part of a growing European network, we support citizens in participating actively in their societies and in acting according to democratic principles. We offer various tailor-made qualifications, motivating and empowering the participants. We also connect and support civil society actors who strengthen cohesion and agency in Europe and beyond, and encourage cross-sectoral cooperation in order to promote social innovation and sustainable urban and rural development. We offer financial and professional support to our members and the alumni of international foundation programmes, helping them to bring their project ideas to life – such as exhibitions, campaigns in public spaces, performances, workshops, meetings and trainings. Members actively shape MitOst’s strategic development.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

We would love to contribute to the network by sharing knowledge, tools, publications, experience and opportunities that we have in our network and programs especially in the field of civil society organisations. We are happy to share training opportunities and to contribute to common events with our expertise and skills. We are very much looking forward to find our more concretely how that can look like.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

As a network organisation we want ot connect with others in order to mulitply the impact of our activities and co-create new ideas and projects. We understand that only by collaboration and cooperation we can reach common objectives and make deep and sustainable change. Therefore, we are always looking for new partners, that go into the same direction, in order to inspire each other, share tools and methods and co-create new things. We are especially interested in enlarging our network in the MENA region, where we are most active at the moment in Tunisia and Egypt (having with Tandem also a larger network in other MENA countries in the field of arts and culture) and where we would love to contribute to sustainable democratic changes and active and strong civil societies.
