General Information
Mahatat is a multi-cultural mobile art initiative. It was founded in 2011 by four individuals from different national and professional backgrounds. Triggered by the post-revolutionary spirit in Egypt, the collective arose from the passion, conviction, dedication and vision of these individuals to encourage the mobility of art in public space. After having introduced Mahatat successfully with our launching event “Shaware3na” (in cooperation with the DEDI, British Council and German Embassy), an art in public spaces project that ran from Jan to June 2012 in Cairo and Giza.
Mission and Objectives

Vision
Mahatat envisions a society in which contemporary art is an accessible and visible part in everyday life and in public spaces.
Mission
Mahatat works toward the accessibility and the decentralization of contemporary art by developing art in public spaces and community art projects all over the country.
Organization’ Strategic Objectives:
1)       Accessibility of contemporary art in Egypt
Mahatat understands access to all kinds of cultural and artistic activities and events as a basic right of every citizen. Hence such activities, whether showcase events or workshops or similar, should be both financially affordable and socially inclusive. Mahatat’s answer to this: Community art and art in public space projects with a focus on participation of audiences, capacity building for emerging artists and non-professionals and in general a stimulation of learning through art.

2)       Decentralization of the contemporary art scene in Egypt
We understand decentralization as a process of continuous de-concentration and diversification of the independent artists and art scenes all over Egypt. Local (independent) artistic stakeholders such as artists, art spaces, art service providers and others are gaining financial, geographic, social, and institutional autonomy from artistic institutions in the capital.

Main Projects / Activities

Our main goal Mahatat’s main goal is the democratization of the arts in Egypt and beyond. Our projects support the development of a civil society in which all citizens are actively and jointly working towards a socio-political environment that is based on participation, freedom of artistic expression and freedom of speech and thereby human rights. Our strategic goals and focus areas All of our programs and projects fall under one of the following strategic goals: Accessibility of contemporary art in Egypt Mahatat understands access to all kinds of cultural and artistic activities and events as a basic right of every citizen. Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

We started our collaboration with Anna Lindh by organizing a participatory art in public space project in Alexandria under the umbrella of the “Farah El Bahr” festival. We find, with the paricipants of the networks, common areas of interest and opportunities of collaboration that we would like to develop further
