Mission and Objectives

Global Visual Cultures is an open forum for theoretical and interdisciplinary-led research in visual studies, cultural globalization, interculturality, and contemporary art. This project is an initiative of the Research Group on Art, Globalization and Interculturality, an academic platform based at the University of Barcelona.
The point of departure of Global Visual Cultures is the recognition of a series of historical issues related to the interplays of different visual cultures worldwide. It aims to strengthen interdisciplinary research on discourses, reactions and imaginaries motivated by cultural globalization, while enhancing international networks dedicated to the critique of topics such as the visual negotiation of identity, the Eurocentric understandings of art history, or the canonization of Western aesthetic models when institutions come to represent cultural diversity through art.

Main Projects / Activities

CVG promotes projects in collaboration (publications, exhibitions, congresses) with other academic institutions and stimulates several practitioners by way of platforms such as Negotiating Difference (a PhD Scholars Forum) or Global Views (a discussion program on new art institutions, globalism, and institutional critique).
