General Information

Civic Forum Institute (CFI) is a Palestinian non-governmental, not for profit organization developed to support the building and development of democracy and democratic institutions, and to strengthen civil society. CFI's structure includes: a 7 person board of directors, an Executive Director, Deputy Director, Development Officer, and 2 Project Coordinators. Additional support such as a part-time accountant, Project Manager(s), and interns are also recruited based on organizational activity needs. CFI is registered with both the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Interior and the Israeli Ministry of Interior. Budgetary resources are dependent upon local/regional call for project proposals and various embassy project funding programs. The 2012-2013 fiscal year secured approximately $100,000 for project implementation. This allocation also covered a portion of the organization's necessary overhead. Over the course of CFI's 15 year history, we have received funding from various American sponsored development programs (MEPI, Consulate small grants, ect), NED, Canadian sponsored development programs (CIDA), as well as various European Donors. Project partners involved in the implementation of projects include: Palestinian Central Elections Committee; the Palestinian National Theatre; ERIS; Minority Rights' Group; and other various partners depending on the action. Typically, CFI's project model includes capacity building education and training followed by a beneficiary implementation activity.

Mission and Objectives

Our Vision is a Palestine in which all citizens are encouraged and enabled to participate equally in the development of an open democratic society where their voices are heard on the issues that affect them. Our Mission is to empower individuals and communities to understand their rights and responsibilities, and be engaged as citizens to participate in the development of democracy in Palestine. Our Objectives: 1.To educate Palestinian’s in their civic rights and raise awareness of the importance of active participation to support democratic development 2.To promote and strengthen individuals, communities and organizations to be leaders in decision making processes 3.To build our internal capacity and develop partnerships to ensure the long term sustainability of our work

Main Projects / Activities

CFI currently has three strategic programmes under implementation over the next three years (2013-2016): 1. Empowering Women as Political and Societal Leaders- Ensuring women’s issues are raised in political and civic development and ensuring women participate on an equal level with men in democratic development is a multi-layered issue, requiring intervention and support on many levels, and CFI’s programme to empower women as political and societal leaders aims to target these. 2. Building Democracy through Increasing Engagement and Participation in Elections and Political Processes- past projects have included: voter education, candidate support, elections monitoring, and review of electoral reforms 3. The Future of Palestine: Young People and Civic Education- this programme aims to promote youth citizenry through participation and action. CFI has worked with young journalists and various Palestinian theatre companies to encourage creativity and alternative methods to inspire youth to work towards local change.
