General Information
Beit Sahour is a town of approximately 15,000 residents and is located one kilometer east of Bethlehem and 10 kilometers south of Jerusalem. Known as the "City of the Shepherds' Fields", the origins of the name Beit Sahour (the house of vigilance) stems from the Canaanite words "Beit" meaning place, and "Sahour" meaning night watch, which reflected the importance of the area for shepherds. Additionally, the area is famous as the biblical site where the angels appeared to the shepherds and announced the "good news" of Jesus' birth. Hence, the long standing and historical tradition of the City of the Shepherds' Fields. Beit Sahour also prides itself on being one of the last Palestinian town with a Christian majority and the town with the highest number of post-secondary educated individuals in Palestine, even perhaps in the whole Middle East.
