Absonus Lab, a non-profit private association situated in Estarreja, Portugal, was established in 2022 with the primary aim of creating a laboratory for sound and musical experimentation. This visionary initiative nurtures a transdisciplinary dialogue where research, art, technology, and science coalesce to construct knowledge rooted in post-digital meta-methodologies, spanning both theoretical and practical dimensions. Sound plays a central role within a technocultural and intercultural ecosystem. Absonus Lab actively endeavors to craft strategies for the promotion, dissemination, and critical discourse of sound arts, digital media art, computerized music, acousmatics, and experimental electronic music within a contemporary framework. Their influence extends from local engagements with Hugo Paquete, a sound art researcher and educator, to collaborations with international artists. Funding is primarily achieved through project proposals, focusing on creative art projects. Absonus Lab has a production fund from Dgartes dedicated to developing an e-opera titled "Negentropy: The Last Man in the Wasteland." In terms of partnerships and relationships, Absonus Lab collaborates with both public and private sectors, sharing insights into the intersection of art and technology, particularly in the context of contemporary sound and music practices. Their collaboration protocol with the University of Algarve and the CIAC: Center for Research in Communication Sciences and Arts further underscores their commitment to advancing knowledge in these domains. A distinctive characteristic of Absonus Lab is its purposeful decentralization away from major urban centers. This approach encourages engagement and communication with surrounding communities, facilitating contact with contemporary sound and music artistic production and theory. This, in turn, contributes to the cultivation of a diverse and critical community of individuals, artists, and enthusiasts, not only in the Central Region of Portugal but also on a broader European and global scale.
Production Absonus Lab organizes and creates art events focused on sound arts, music, art, and technology, encouraging experimentation in art. The goal is to showcase the wide range of meta-methodologies used in contemporary sound and technological music creation and their applicability as interventions and in understanding the contemporary social, artistic, and technological universe. This is achieved by involving activities with scientific, social, and artistic communities. Absonus Lab aims to support the creation and theoretical and practical research of artworks and studies, including artistic installations, compositions, and auditory experiences, such as sound arts, computer-produced music, and independent research and study programs. Electronic Music Laboratory The establishment of an electronic music laboratory that concentrates on music composition and production, connecting various fields of study, including acoustic ecology, acousmatic music, sound spatialization, post-digital music, microsounds, and maximal sounds. The focus is on extensive research in musical-computational informatics. Technological Development and Pilot Projects Promoting participation in creative programs and activities in the development of new technologies and research in art and society and their potential creative applications. Implementing research and pilot projects, promoting training programs, and collaborating with public and private entities in the community.
Artistic Creation Sound, art, and technology are considered gateways to knowledge through the process of listening and how this experience is shaped in the individual and their social relationships with the event and its context, identity, imagination, representation, and culture. Sound is simultaneously viewed as social and material, based on the social study of sound and contemporary social theories. It is understood within a framework where the world consists of "multiple essences" in a system of relationships between actors, including humans, animals, plants, geology, and technologies. It is comprehended through dynamic articulations and accumulations of various personal, cultural, and contextual meanings in a process of participation, interaction, and reflection. Connections are established between sound-music and other disciplines such as sociology, aesthetics, and technology.
Absonus Lab's affiliation with the ALF Network promises to be a mutually beneficial partnership. Absonus Lab's unique commitment to the intersection of technology and cross-sectoral arts is poised to bring valuable innovation to the Network. This commitment is particularly noteworthy, as it bridges the realms of technology and the arts, offering new inputs for exploration and creativity. As a potential member of the ALF Network, our aim is to create connections within the local community, foster collaborations with kindred spirits and institutions, and explore promising opportunities. By participating in the Network, we not only stand to benefit from the collective wisdom and experiences of fellow members but also seek to contribute our unique insights, expertise, and available resources to further the Network's mission. We envision Absonus Lab taking an active role within the Network by sharing our groundbreaking methodologies, collaborating with like-minded entities, and collectively pushing the boundaries of art, technology, and societal architecture. Our commitment to innovation and exploration aligns seamlessly with the Network's aspirations, and we look forward to making a meaningful contribution.
I believe that Absonus Lab possesses the potential to be a valuable addition to the ALF Network. Its commitment to the convergence of technology and cross-sectoral arts is particularly noteworthy. Absonus Lab's emphasis on sound and musical experimentation, coupled with the exploration of intercultural and technocultural ecosystems, represents both innovation and alignment with the ever-evolving paradigms of art and technology within the context of societal evolution and transformation. The objective of Absonus Lab to contemplate culture, communities, modes of production, and the aesthetic interplay between music and society is a pivotal undertaking in our swiftly changing world. This initiative recognizes the dynamic shifts in culture and society and aims to address them through artistic expression, technology, and the power of innovation. In my quest to join the ALF Network, I aspire to connect Absonus Lab with kindred spirits, institutions, and promising opportunities. By becoming an integral part of this esteemed network, we not only stand to gain from the collective knowledge and experiences of its members but also aspire to contribute to the ALF Network's overarching mission by sharing our unique insights, expertise, and available resources. I foresee Absonus Lab taking an active role within the Network, sharing its groundbreaking methodologies and fostering collaborations with other entities dedicated to pushing the boundaries of art, technology, and societal architecture. I eagerly anticipate the prospect of making a meaningful contribution to the ALF Network, establishing connections with fellow members, and collectively advancing the domains of art, technology, and social progress. Furthermore, I extend my gratitude for considering my application and look forward to the possibility of participating in the ALF Network's exciting initiatives.

One of the main cultural goals of the Institution is the entwined path between arts and education, mainly music education with a varied set of instruments teaching, in classic and early music fields, towards an age spectrum up to 18 years old and with a minor representation in adult education.
The main cultural drive is the valorization of the National and Regional Artistic production, through commissioning several works to Portuguese Composers, mainly: Bernardo Sassetti, Tiago Cutileiro, Pedro Louzeiro, Nuno Rodrigues, Armando Mota, Joaquim Galvão. The strongest concept in these music commissions is the enhancement and promotion of the Algarve's intangible heritage, through the orchestration of traditional pieces in an erudite way, e.g. "Concerto em Dó" for Piano and Orchestra, inspired by the regional theme "Baile mandado", (Armando Mota, 2011) , "Ti'Anita de Loulé", traditional music theme orchestrated for wind Instruments, voice and accordion, (Nuno Rodrigues, 2012), and “Gilda das Amendoeiras” (Nuno Rodrigues 2013), chamber music opera conceived in relation to the traditional Algarve tale (Lenda das Amendoeiras).
AML is also active in promoting Portuguese intangible heritage (fado and cante alentejano), putting together new emergent composers and ensembles such as Ana Pinhal, Manuel Maio (2014 and 2015) with traditional music groups such as Cantadeiras de Redondo and Grupo Etnográfico da Casa do Povo de Brinches (April 2015). It also aims at the internationalization of its ensembles, such as Ensemble Suest'Arte, with debut in Portugal and Spain for an INTERREG project in 2007 and a premiere in November 2015 in Georgia, for the EU Cultural Week, with a programme around Atlantic and Mediterranean Intangible heritage, including a partnership with the Georgian Polyphony IBERI Choir.
In these activities, the AML is responsible for the coordination of the commissioned works and the performances, putting together composers, students, emerging talents and professionals, and thus bringing together art and education as a whole.
The AML strives for keeping several orchestral ensembles, varying from 15 up to 100 musicians on stage, where professional musicians (teachers at the AML), are presented in stage along with their pupils, at a high quality level performance: Orquestra Clássica da Academia", “Orquestra de Sopros do Algarve”, “1001 Cordas”, “Orquestra de Percussão”, etc. Goal is to engage the youngsters, since early age, in professional performances, for audience reinforcement and education . AML has a wide portfolio meeting high quality standards of music playing with an intensive events annually agenda that includes music concerts, festivals, competitions, workshops and master classes (circa 300 events per year) with regional, national and international artists, namely : Festival Internacional de Percussão Cidade de Portimão [International Percussion Festival of Portimão], Concurso de Música Anatólio Cidade de Lagos [International Music Competition Anatólio Falé City of Lagos], Estágio Internacional de Cordas [International Strings Course], Estágio de Sopros (Winds Orchestra Course), Ciclo de Música Antiga [Early Music Festival] Sons Antigos a Sul.
One one hand, the AML has a strong track record in promoting Mediterranean Intangible heritage in the fields of Music, being the most active private Association in the fields of Culture in the Algarve region.
One the other hand, the Algarve - AlGharb AlAndalus - is the strongest Mediterranean driven region in Portugal, mainly because of the strong Arab influence.
We would like to contribute in engaging in professional partnerships with other cultural institutions to promote the intangible heritage (early and traditional music) of the Iberian Peninsula (mainly Portugal and the Algarve region) and viceversa, bringing Mediterranean artists to the region, in order to give public awareness on strong and still unknown cultural bonds.
We want to join Anna Lindh Foundation to be involved in likeminded individuals and organizations that share the same values and passion towards cultural bonds: the Mediterranean.
Music is the best anthidote for Historical Amnesia, in Jordi Savall's words. Music is also a way of bringing people together, through sharing the same cultural values. It is an essential path in the Mediterranean world of today.
"Why are we afraid of Strangers? - In the "1001 Nights" tale of Sindbad, meeting strangers was described as an enchanting experience worth the risks of navigating to faraway Indian and Chinese ports. Sindbad's positive vision of strangers led me to go deeper in researching 9th century Baghdad".

Tocá Rufar is an artistic and cultural education project that aims to assert and promote the Bombo (traditional Portuguese bass drum) and traditional Portuguese percussion. The project excels in placing art, learning and Portuguese culture in a privileged position as a source of value, development and contemporaneity, and by making it accessible to all.
Tocá Rufar’s mission is to promote the Bombo as a symbol of modern Portuguese culture and identity and to develop its practice in an orchestral context that concentrates on a contemporary expression of traditional Portuguese percussion, alongside providing exemplary educational practices within an instructive framework.
By creating and innovating from within the heart of traditional culture and employing high quality artistic practices, we intend to develop and export the image of a modern, agile, active, creative and innovative Portugal with a strong cultural identity. This is in addition to having a preeminent organizational model that can be applied by other national and foreign bodies.
Considering the contemporary cultural scene in Portugal, projects such as Tocá Rufar are essentially initiatives of sociocultural intervention and consequently provide alternative cultural models and practices to those offered by an entertainment industry that does not require the personal and social development of individuals and groups. Therefore, we participate in sociocultural projects that work towards the development of civil society, in particular the sectors that are most at risk and in need of attention.
The contribution and creativity of Tocá Rufar as a leader of distinction in the area of social work is summed up well by Rui Júnior, founder and director of the project, when in discussion with a local representative of education: “When our members enrol in the Tocá Rufar Orchestra, they take on the responsibility of representing the culture and identity of an entire country; due to its visibility, this initiative provokes a sense of duty. As a result, we demand hours of hard work and have strict rules on conduct, appearance and posture. Our members are artists and, above all, demanding and deserving human beings and – I guarantee you – they will know how to make important decisions and take on responsibilities, today and in the future, and do everything for their country. Therefore, sir, you need to give them the respect and admiration that they deserve. Any person that joins the orchestra, whether they are a child, teenager, adult, male or female, is considered and treated by Tocá Rufar as a talented individual.”
Under the motto “Lend yourself! Express yourself! Exceed yourself!”, Tocá Rufar gives its students a new and improved self-perception while also requiring them to find a balance between their personal will and the common good thus enabling them to affirm an individual identity within the community.
Performing social work through art provides them with the refuge of traditional culture while also extending their horizons and showing them a promising future within their reach and bestowing upon them the freedom to set their own limits. Besides proving the “tools” to achieve this, Tocá Rufar also demands effort, enthusiasm and the spirit of sacrifice, teaching its students in the process to be independent and take charge of their own lives.
Defining itself as an artistic and cultural project, Tocá Rufar protects its members from any social prejudice linked to their background, age, gender, race, culture or sexual orientation. Tocá Rufar is investing in the creation of platform that gives everyone equal opportunities to access the project and grow within it and within society.
By teaching in a group, Tocá Rufar brings together individuals whose social realities normally do not coincide or interact, however, once integrated into the orchestra everyone acquires equal status. Like members of a family, one common space is shared by people of different generations, cultures, life experiences, education, social status and identities. It is a space where everyone is understood and judged only on their input, goodwill and personal merit.
Orchestra members have the opportunity to access places and contexts that the majority of people do not. These have included: playing alongside renowned artists such as Buraka Som Sistema, Fafá de Belém, Fausto, Jorge Palma, José Mário Branco, Mickael Carreira, Paulo de Carvalho, Rui Júnior & oÓquesomtem?, Tony Carreira, Xutos & Pontapés, to name just a few; representing Portugal at international events including several World Expos (Expo’98 Lisbon; Expo Hannover 2002 Germany; Expo Aichi 2006 Japan), the Signing of the Treaty of Lisbon and several Festivals in the UK and in Belgium; and travelling the world and meeting people from various backgrounds. This not only plays an integral part in personal development but also provides a greater capacity for understanding and acceptance.
As well as having a direct effect upon its students, the project also influences those that engage with the group. Tocá Rufar’s shows and the manner in which its members behave and present themselves publicly inspires thousands of spectators, not just because of the high standard of music but also due to the integrity, education, generosity and kindness that they exude. Tocá Rufar members set an example, they challenge and nourish the spirit and are an important stimulus for community solidarity and service.
More than 80% of the orchestra’s performances are made available to promoters that do not have the resources to afford the costs of hiring, provided that the principals and underlying causes are considered fair and of value. So that the sustainability of the project is not put at risk, Tocá Rufar charges a higher rate to those that can afford to pay it and, indirectly, places upon the richest in society a social, educational and cultural role that quite often they refuse to assume.
Every year Tocá Rufar teaches around 500 students for free.

It has as main objective the development of Alto Tâmega region, in all socio-economic-environemntal dimensions.
The cultural valorization and heritage promotion and conservation, as well as promotion of local human capital are also among the objectives of ADRAT.
For that, it works closely not only with the associates and other local and regional organizations, but also gets involved in projects and initiatives or European dimension.
For this purpose we refer some projects implemented in the recent years, with finantial support of European programmes:
• INTERREG IV-C (project B2N www.business2nature.eu),
• POCTEP (projects COOPERA+ http://www.cooperamais.org/index.php/pt and PROMERCADO),
• ATLANTIC (project ECO-INNOVA http://www.ecoinnova.info),
• SUDOE (project TERMARED www.termared.com).
• ERASMUS+: we are currently the lead partner of ERASMUS+ project INCUB TRAINING (www.incubtraining.org).
ADRAt also has experience for more than 10 year, on training and consulting SME.
ADRAT has a large number of contacts with national and European organizations, with whom has been implementing different projects and activities. Also, given the rural nature of our region and its bordering location, we can contribute with our experiences and cultural values as well as with our consolidated knowledge in several aspects related with regional development.
ADRAT consider that cooperation with other entities, national and international, is a key-method to increase the human and technical capacity of the organizations.
The exchange of knowledge and experiences, the study and contacts with good practices from other entities and regions is also quite important to innovate and improve the competences and human conditions all-over Europe and Mediterranean basin.
Participating in such network it will also possible to find complementaries to actions previously implemented or needing improvements.
