The Swedish Dialogue Institute for the Middle East and North Africa is hosting a series of online meeting on the theme of Women, Peace, and Security (WPS). The first meeting took place on April 30th focusing on how policymakers can support the WPS ecosystem. Participants included representatives from civil society, academia, international organizations and public officials from the MENA region and Europe.
Participants discussed how the WPS ecosystem can be strengthened, in the face of backlash against women’s rights, by increasing cooperation and sharing of experiences within the network. The need for broadening the scope of the WPS agenda beyond its current North to South focus was also emphasized, including new themes such as migration, armament, or occupation. Other elements raised was the tendency to excessively focus on the issue of protection of women, thereby risking to overshadow the continued need for prioritizing strengthening women’s political participation as well as victimizing women.
The second meeting took place on June 26th. The discussions focused on the role of media in raising awareness on issues related to women, peace and security.
Participants discussed the crucial role that media plays in informing about conflicts, but recognized that news coverage of conflict and peace building rarely includes gendered perspectives and that women often are underrepresented in reporting.
Media’s role and responsibility in inclusive representation of the diversity of the population (gender, age, ethnicity etc.) was underlined as was the potential role media could play in raising awareness about Women, Peace, and Security (WPS). Many reflections were shared during the discussion, including on the importance of portraying women not only as victims but also as agents of change, the need to adapt language to better explain the WPS agenda to different audiences and the necessity for smart messaging to encourage other actors to adopt WPS principles.
During the meeting participants shared experiences and best practices and a guidebook on “Mainstreaming the WPS agenda in the MENA region through media” (https://lnkd.in/d2ngB_Md) was presented.
