Heads of Network Meeting Istanbul December 2023 - an Irish perspective by grassroots member Peadar King

Peadar King is a long-standing member of the Irish ALF Network. He is a journalist, documentary maker and is the producer and presenter of the RTÉ global affairs series, ‘What In The World’.

Peadar travelled to Istanbul last month on behalf of the Irish ALF Network. He has a pending report on his time in Istanbul for RTÉ global affairs series, ‘What In The World’ next month.

Read an excerpt from Peadar's experience:

Fanning out from Taksim Square in the European quarter of Istanbul, a city that straddles many worlds, is a dense network of side streets and the 1.5-kilometre Istiklal Caddes also known as “independence caddesi or avenue, its signature pedestrian boulevard. Here, the garish lighting from shopping chains that mark contemporary cities across the western world mask the beauty of 19th century buildings. Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, Subway, Burger King, Starbucks. They're all here. Off the boulevard, the more alluring side streets are filled with bars, antique shops and rooftop restaurants with views over the Bosporus. The square itself encapsulates centuries of Turkish history. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1918 and the Turkish war of independence in 1923 construction began of The Republic Monument to commemorate the foundation of the Turkish Republic, the end of the Ottoman monarchy and the Islamic caliphate.

At least that is how it seemed at 7.30 in the evening as we made our way to one of the many restaurants off Istikal Caddesi. People strolling along. All ages of people. People at their leisure. Working people too. Coming and going.

Inside the restaurant, men served tables. This was an all-male domain. Conversation verged as is often the case from the ridiculous to the sublime. The most recognised name of any given country. For Ireland, James Joyce was the outright winner with Oscar Wilde a distant second. He is Irish, one person queried. Regrettably, I could not name one person from Estonia. Latvia, another blank. Lithuania, likewise. Sibelius from Finland I ventured. We may share common membership of the European Union but of these people and their countries, I know very little, I thought.

After dinner and back onto Istikal Caddes. It’s just after 10 and the tenor of the street has changed. So too has the demographics. Mostly but not exclusively young people. The alcohol free café bars are teeming. We gather around glasses of Turkish tea. This time I’m in the company of a Luxembourger and a woman from Kazakhstan, now living in Rome and representing Italy at the conference.  He has hiked in the Almaty mountains. In the snow.  She is impressed. Talk turns to politics, relations with Russia and the collapse of the Soviet Union. To this day she tells us, her grandmother yearns for the safety and security of the old Soviet Union.

We roam from one café to another to a bar meeting up with some of the thirty plus delegates that make up our conference. Suddenly, it's 3am. Time to head for our temporary home. Istikal Caddes has been transformed. Now the street belongs to the poor of Istanbul, Children hawking coffee and single roses. Well wrapped babies held close to their mothers’ chests. Adults hawking other goods too. It’s as if the street has been given a new life. A very different life.

General Information

Herstory is a multi-disciplinary education platform and cultural movement that tells the stories of women - past, present and future.

OUR DISCOVERY
In contrast to the handful of women taught on the Irish school curriculum, Herstory discovered that there are over one thousand inspirational female role models featured in the Dictionary of Irish Biography.

THE PROBLEM
History censored women’s stories in the past.
Today, popular culture dictates the stories deemed 'worthy' of our attention, diluting women's representation and leaving countless role models in the shadows.  The amnesia of women’s stories is not just an Irish problem - this is a global phenomenon.

The achievements and struggles of women have been lost in the shadows, resulting in global inequality and a regression of women’s rights. The lack of authentic role models for today’s young girls affects their confidence, self-worth, life decisions, and ability to reach their potential.

WITH YOUR SUPPORT
WE CAN REWRITE HISTORY
AND THE FUTURE.

Mission and Objectives

MISSION
Founded in 2016, our mission is to give youth and the public authentic female role models and a game-changing education programme, inspiring countries around the world to start their own Herstory movements.

OBJECTIVES
Change the way women’s stories are told forever by deconstructing female stereotypes and presenting their complete, multi-faceted characters.

Create a democracy of storytelling; valuing all women equally by showcasing national heroines beside unknown, overlooked women.

Bridge the disconnection between the extensive academic knowledge of women’s stories and the dilution of women’s representation in mainstream media and culture.

Spark a global movement where Ireland inspires the world to celebrate and empower women and girls, as we strive for equality for everyone.

Develop an innovative storytelling platform and education programme with core projects that
can be adapted worldwide.

Main Projects / Activities

Since 2017, the annual International Herstory Light Festival has made national news headlines illuminating landmarks in honour of women and girls. In 2018, Herstory initiated and co-produced the Blazing a Trail exhibition with EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum and the Department of Foreign Affairs – it’s the first women’s exhibition to tour the Irish Embassy network worldwide. In 2019 we co-produced Herstory on RTÉ, Ireland’s first 360° comprehensive women’s storytelling, featuring a major documentary TV series, animation series, podcasts, school workshops and more. See www.rte.ie/herstory. In 2020 we teamed up with Our Table to launch Melting Pot gatherings in support of the campaign to end Direct Provision (Ireland’s notorious refugee system) and celebrate our new multi-cultural Ireland.

Herstory events have taken place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Council of Europe, University of Oxford, Dublin Castle, Belfast City Hall and more. Within 4 years, Herstory has become a household name in Ireland.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

Herstory welcomes the opportunity for collaboration and cross-polination with sister organisations in the ALF Network, through the highlighting of women's stories, co-creation projects, and other opportunities.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

Herstory is hugely inspired by the incredible work of the Anna Lindh Foundation across the 43 member countries. Cross-cultural projects have never been more important, especially in these globally turbulent times we live in. We know that when we empower women, society greatly benefits on the whole.

Highlight from the work of Glencree Centre for Peace & Reconciliation in Northern Ireland

Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation Belfast 2023

Cross border work is vital to the island of Ireland especially in the context post-Brexit; its impact on relations between Ireland and Northern Ireland as well as local and border communities. Staff from Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation travelled to Belfast last year  - find out what they did below:

The Intercultural and Refugee Programme of the Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation visited  Belfast in Northern Ireland in July 2023  to network and learn about the needs  of displaced and culturally diverse migrant communities  in  Northern Ireland .

The Community Intercultural Relations Team were delighted to meet friends and colleagues in the sector including Cuthbert Tura Arutura, Capacity Building Manager of Africa House, Chief Commissioner Alyson Kilpatrick of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, Eileen Chan-Yu, Founder of CRAIC NI and Rym Akhonzada, Founder & MD of Yallaa at venues including 2 Royal Avenue and the Linen Hall. The second day included an enriching sharing of ideas and models of practice session with cultural diversity social enterprise Arts Ekta's Nisha Tandon and embodiment practitioner & facilitator at Belfast Yoga Collective, Ally Armstrong. Future cross-border cooperation raised included north-south study visits for staff and volunteers and ongoing sharing of intercultural dialogue methodologies.  Glencree staff and their Belfast counterparts felt strongly that such continued contact would strengthen and enrich intercultural work on the whole island of Ireland.

Amina Hadj Ameur, a member of the Intercultural and Refugee  Team, recently took part in “Ethical photography and storytelling” training by FemLENS through ALF

General Information
IndieCork is a new organisation, established to hold an annual media arts festival in the city of Cork. It aims to promote the film-making community of Ireland and engage in outreach arts projects which enhance cultural experience and expression.  IndieCork is an independent, community-owned organisation, and as such is concerned with such issues as freedom of speech, creative independence and cultural diversity. It aims to develop a sustainable model of arts provision in Ireland which will promote and protect those values.
Mission and Objectives

IndieCork is a limited liability company as an Industrial and provident society. It's members are shareholders and have a direct influence on the strategic creative agenda of the organisation. It is a collectively-run organisation, whose management is chosen by and from its members. IndieCork has no full time paid employees, though its managment committee are highly experienced in festival production at an international level.
IndieCork is currently not a recipient of state support. It's main sources of revenue are shareholder's subscriptions, tickets, advertising and a local sponsor. It has  received support  from the Goethe Institute and the American Embassy to Ireland. It's turnover was roughly €40k in its first year.
In it's first year IndieCork has worked in partnership with Hamburg Film Festival, The Lux Prize (European Parliament Competition), Mental Nord (Nordic Short Films) and local organisations such as the Cork Film Centre and the Guesthouse Arts Centre.

Main Projects / Activities

IndieCork's main event is an annual film and media arts festival, which is to take place each autumn in the city of Cork. This event includes film screenings, musical performances, practical media workshops, art installations and exhibitions. The event worked closely with local film-makers and musicians, many of whom have become members of this self-sustaining creative community.
The first festival specialised in international and Irish short films, 'indie' and experimental music performances and collaborations with other visual and performance arts (programme is attached). IndieCork has also contributed programmes of films to Glasgow Film festival and the Liverpool Irish festival, and as a core strategy envisages considerably more partnership projects in the future.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

IndieCork already has a strong connection with local, national and international artsists, particularly but not exclusively in the field of cinema. This network may provide the basis for valuable partnership relations between member organisations. As IndieCork's strategy is established by its members and not its funders, it is able create and respond to imaginative cultural projects of all kinds. Though its financial resources may presently be limited, its access to the arts community, both in ireland and abroad, would have enormous potential for the ALF network.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

IndieCork is a non-heirarchical organisation which, if it is to reach its own potential, needs to wrk in partnership with other organisations, and it is particularly well suited to engaging with those with a social agenda. As a new organisation it is important to form strong working relationships with other partners, and membership would allow us to develop in these areas at a wider level than present. It will also enable IndieCork to develop long-term sustainable projects with partners that share our social and collective ethos.

I am a individual that is self-funding my research. As a mature student I have found that obstacles suddenly become serious due to my age. It is this that I want to bring to the form.
Mission and Objectives

I am a mature research student in the process of working towards my PhD. My area of research is heritage and religion for a specific area in Ireland.

Main Projects / Activities

I have had three papers accepted by both national and international conferences that have proved that I have a legitimate research project.

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

My Thesis for my PhD will be on the way your network can be used to enhance the lives of many people here. The work in had has only begun and by the toime of your conference I will have progressed far more.

Why do you want to join the ALF Network?

I feel that I have a lot to offer in terms of what I have uncovered in regard to religion and how it is discriminated against. It is by bringing out what I have found to the greater audience that is the only method of combatting this evil.
