What is intercultural competence?
Intercultural competence covers the skills and knowledge you need to learn in order to become better at managing intercultural encounters effectively and professionally.
Intercultural competence consists of three parts: knowledge, insight and tools for action. They are interrelated and therefore need to be developed together.
Knowledge - to understand
- what culture is and what culture means to us
- how culture affects our view of the world
- how culture affects our communication with each other
Insight - to realise...
- how you are shaped by culture
- what cultural values, norms and traditions influence your choices
- the challenges and rewards of intercultural encounters - both for you and the person you are interacting with
Tools for action - to be able to
- see through and reflect on what happens in an intercultural encounter - even if it has gone wrong
- communicate openly and clearly so that cultural misunderstandings are cleared up and information is more easily conveyed
- respond respectfully and effectively
