We seek solutions to remove barriers to education, participation and greater autonomy for young people around the world. Our activities include capacity building for NGOs seeking to improve access to education and civic participation for school-age youth.  

Mission and Objectives

Mission Our mission is to promote access to education, inclusion and participation for marginalised and at-risk groups (including women, children and migrants). Description Access Lab is a non-governmental organisation with expertise in education and training. We explore causes of low access to school education in different countries of the world and communicate these stories. We also help local leaders (municipalities and NGOs) to find solutions to remove barriers to education, participation and greater autonomy for young people. Access Lab provides training and capacity building and partners local organisations for projects aiming to improve access.

- Teacher policies in Central and Eastern Europe, Western Balkans, South Caucasus, Central Asia (main partner Network of Education Policy Centres) (2013)  - Capacity building for civil society actors in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan (2014) - Development of Teacher training course "Being Different, Being Human" (2014) for NEPC summer school "Education and Social Justice"

The organization is structured as follows: Mr. Hisham El Rouby (Founder and CEO), Mr. Karim Shawer (Head of Programmes) and a team of Senior and Junior programme specialists with a total of 15 permanent staff and around 20 national and international partners. Etijah’ssources for funding projects, operations, salaries and other overhead costs include grants from local/international organizations, donations from governmental entities, individual donors, local/international foundations. Etijah’s main specialization is developing, improving and disseminating development methodologies in the field of youth and community development through tailored up-to-date and high-quality development methodologies, research tools, applicable practices of youth development and training delivery models. Various partners are highly involved in the organization’s projects such as; UNFPA; Plan international; CRS (Catholic Relief Services) and the British Council.
Mission and Objectives

Etijah has a mission to create and tailor up-to-date and high-quality development methodologies, research tools, applicable practices of youth development and training delivery models, to be able to qualify youth by providing them with the skills, know-how and aptitudes, as well as contribute in building the capacity of governmental and non-governmental youth-serving organizations. Our role is to provide youth with direct access to unconditional participation by providing them with practical tools and models for developing community-wide initiatives.
Etijah’smain objective is building the capacity of the governmental and nongovernmental youth-serving organizations so that it could provide a professional and safe context for the youth development in Egypt, Etijah considers the positive means for youth development by providing complete youth participation through providing them with the tools and practical models to improve the local community initiatives.

Main Projects / Activities

Etijah has consistently developed and led projects that promote youth empowerment and leadership. These projects require developing special educational curriculum, a wide variety of training workshops and skills enhancement of youth coordinators, seminars and conferences, onsite trainings of participants and/or beneficiaries of the services, promoting national and international accredited standards for development, capacity building for youth clubs and organizations and finally, widely accessible mentorship programs. Some of these projects are:
1. Pioneers of Egypt/ Mobaderoon Masr- A current project
The project serves as a vehicle for the disbursement of financial and capacity building grants to high-impact grassroots initiatives where the overall objective is to contribute to a successful transition to democracy and economic prosperity in Egypt by expanding employment and self-employment opportunities, particularly for youth, and supporting the new generation of civil society and business leaders.
2.  Ezbet Khair Allah Community Study Project
With main objective to conduct a community study in EzbetKhairAllah area where the institute selected 35 young people from both genders and trained them on how to conduct a community study of the available resources and skills on all different levels within the community. Moreover it provided them with the necessary tool to finish the study under the supervision of Etijah’s team.
3. Activating the Role of Youth in the Egyptian Society
The goal of this project was to involve Egyptian youth in public life to spread, support and improve the sense of social responsibility among youth from eight Egyptian governorates: Cairo, Assiut, South Sinai, Qaliobeya, Gharbeya, Monofeya, Alexandria and Menya. The project was designed to help 4,500 young males and females whose age ranges between 18 and 24 years old directly and 20,000 young males and females indirectly, to become the leaders and the driving force of the process of social change to provide them with a bright future.

4. Strategic planning for 40 schools in El-Marg District in Cairo

The strategic planning workshops aim at raising the planning skills of the participants from fourty schools. The participants from each school are as follows: the school principle, the training unit director, and representatives of the Board of Trustees of the school. The design of the workshop is based on an initial "needs assessment" study conducted with the participants from all schools. This unique strategic planning program is considered the first of its kind to be implemented in the educational institutions in Egypt.

5. Enhancing the well-being of the Al-Badraman community through implementing a comprehensive asset-based development project

The project aimed to tackle the problems of unemployment, education and health in the Al-Badrman village, one of the villages located in Menia Governorate. The main activities included designing a comprehensive program with different components. The program concentrated on the aforementioned developmental concerns.  The direct beneficiaries included young people and children, and all families and populations in Al–Badraman. The project was based upon utilizing the community assets and resources in Al-Badraman and building on them to realize full participation and development of the village. Expected results included: reducing rates of school drop outs and illiteracy among community members and conducting health awareness campaigns on a specific health topic in the community.  Cadres of young people also have received a comprehensive training on studying community assets and needs, mapping local assets, and utilizing assets to fulfill the community needs.
 

How can you contribute to the Network in your country?

tijah will add to ALF network as an experienced leading NGO by two means; On one hand, Etijah will make use of its past experience with international partners on strategic issues for the community especially the empowerment of youth and active citizenship for marginalized groups through developing, improving and disseminating development methodologies in the field of youth and community development. on the other hand, Etijah will form an active partner within ALF network and try to seek future partnership with other peers at the network in order to exchange knowledge and best practices from the peer review.

The Anna Lindh Foundation runs the largest Network of civil society organizations involved in the promotion of intercultural dialogue across Europe and the Mediterranean; for this it would be a great opportunity for Etijah as a civil society leader to be joining this network as it will have a wider impact on the community.

The Society`s Mission:

NSDL seeks to disseminate and promote the concepts of democracy and human rights for all segments of Palestinian society, and is working to raise public awareness to the principles, values ​​and the foundations of human rights through its programs and the professional qualified staff, in addition to monitoring and documenting all violations against the citizens and  individuals of the various entities and to prosecute Perpetrators  according to international and local conventions.

The Global Understanding Project is a virtual online cultural collaboration which graduates 40 students per year (20 per semester). The course helps in developing students who are fully equipped to function adequately outside their cultural comfort zone, through engaging them in cultural interaction twice a week for 2 hours with worldwide students from different universities including: Turkey, USA, Brazil, Mexico, China, Malaysia, Portugal, France, and Switzerland. Students tackle subjects ranging from family, education, culture, life and faith, traditions, and stereotypes. Such interactions will help them break cultural barriers and stereotypes, develop a fruitful cross cultural dialogue and cooperation, and enhance their communication and social skills along with cultural competence
Mission and Objectives

The project is aiming at building an intercultural dialogue between youth on a global scale. It heads towards imroving their intercultural and communicative competences and enhace their social and interaction skills wich will help them to be more engaged in building a platform of collaboration between different cultures to break cultural barriers and stereotypes that may challenge peace building.

my contribution to the network lie most importantly on its expansion and promotion as it remains of little popularity in the country. I will serve as an embassador of culture and spread the culture of diversity appreciation among young leaders and future change makers. I will also make sure to contribute in building a firm platform of sharing, collaboration, and exchange of ideas, cultures, perspectives and dialogues among youth on an international scale

I want to join the ALF network for i want to promote cultural understanding in the mediterranean region and being part of the network would be a great push and help to realise such goals. Inkitab is non-profit company established in 2013. It aims to spread a culture of Arabic book reading in the society, and enriching Arabic content on the Internet. Inkitab holds 7 book discussions every month under 4 different groups one of them is dedicated to children. Inkitab has started as a social book club that utilizes various social media tools in 2011, to encourage youth to read and reach out to people through live-tweeting and posting on Facebook during book discussions as well live-streaming via Web TV. It has hosted a number of famous Arab and local writers such as Ibrahim Nasrallah, Dr. Youssef Zeidan, Mourid Al-Barghouti, Jamal Naji, Elias Farkouh and more. The Website www.inkitab.me is used as a tool to publish articles related to books and culture regularly and encourage young people to write.

Main Projects / Activities

Inkitab Kids
Inkitab Kids is a project that aims to encourage children to read in Arabic and reinforces their relationship with the Arabic language. It also provides the kids with a safe and friendly atmosphere where they can unleash their creativity. The book club is held twice a month during which book-reading and other learning activities take place in the forms of story-telling and games.
 
Khotwa
A new project launched by Inkitab to enhance the role of reading groups in creating and spreading culture. Khotwa aims to establish book clubs and reading groups in various Jordanian governorates by holding their hands to take their very first step in the world of book clubs. The project is based on holding 8 book discussions during 4 months based on a pre-prepared plan.
Members of the book club will meet every two weeks to discuss a book in a suitable public space.
 
Hopes for Women Book Club
The Hopes Book Club Meetings launched November 3rd, 2012 is an effort to begin to promote reading amongst the Hopes students. Book clubs can help develop literacy skills, while also developing their analyzing and critical-thinking skills.
The Hopes Book Club can also help foster positive relationships and communication skills amongst their friends and peers. We are always looking for companies and sponsors to help promote our book-club meetings.
Noon Bookfair
Noon – Inkitab’s second hand bookfair is a non-for-profit initiative that aims to enhance a culture of knowledge sharing and enabling low-income earners of buying and reading books.
It is all about passing on books to others by selling them cheap to allow more people to read and learn while at the same time helping people get rid of old books occupying personal spaces in their homes and replace them with new ones.
With the help of young enthusiastic volunteers; Inkitab has organized 4 successful bookfairs so far in Amman and Irbid, and managed to sell 3000 books in the 1st second hand bookfair ever, 8000 books in the second, 12,000 in the 3rd bookfair that took place on Cultural Street in Shmeisani and finally Noon had an unprecedented success in the 4th and largest bookfair in which almost 30,000 books were sold and 7000 book lover showed up during the 2-day event. Noon would not have achieved any of this without the help and support of more than 150 volunteers who took part in gathering, classifying and selling books with such determination and big smiles.
Noon has started out as an opportunity for everyone to get books with affordable prices but gradually turned into a cultural festival. Besides selling books; Noon included book signing events for well-known and aspiring Arab writers in addition to specialized booths for everything related to reading.
