The FAIC has a board of directors of 15 members including the President. The administrative structure has a general secretary (Ms Anna Maria Bertini) and an employee and they are supported by two officials belonging to the ranks of member municipalities (Cities of Ancona and Fano).
The average budget is around 40,000 euros. The resources come from member fees and from European and national projects.
The FAIC manages European projects in the youth, culture and citizenship sectors, promotes exchanges between public administrations, contributes to EUSAIR activities with seminars and contributions to mayors' trips.
The main partners are the member municipalities, the European Commission, the Adriatic Ionian Initiative, the Marche Region, the ANCI, the Forum of the Adriatic and Ionian Chambers of Commerce (FORUMAIC) and the Association of Adriatic and Ionian Universities (UNIADRION)
The Forum of Adriatic and Ionian Cities (FAIC) is a non-profit international association open to municipalities of the Adriatic Ionian region.
It was founded in Ancona in 1999, with the approval of the “Charter of Ancona”, upon the initiative of the Municipality of Ancona and of the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI), establishing a set of principles aimed at creating a place for intercultural dialogue and political mediation and fostering a peaceful Adriatic and Ionian community, open to Europe.
Today it represents a tool for economic, political, cultural and human cooperation, broadly in line with the European Union Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR). The FAIC has been officially recognised as key actor of the implementation of the Strategy, fully supporting it through all its activities and collaborating with the European Commission and the other relevant institutions. The FAIC is also formally involved in the Adriatic Ionian Initiative (AII) Round Tables works, fostering the EUSAIR Thematic Steering Groups.
From 2019, FAIC is member of the UNEP Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development.
It brings together local authorities of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, North Macedonia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia.
1)The Adriatic Ionian Network of Universities, Regions, Chambers of Commerce and Cities Initiative PLUS (AI-NURECC PLUS) is a preparatory action financed by DG REGIO that will capitalise on the results of the AI-NURECC Initiative, ended in December 2019.
This project is coordinated by the CPMR with the support of four partners from the area: the Adriatic Ionian Euroregion (AIE), the Forum of Adriatic and Ionian Cities (FAIC), the Forum of the Adriatic and Ionian Chambers of Commerce (FORUM AIC), and the Association of Universities of the Adriatic Ionian area (UniAdrion).
The AI-NURECC PLUS partners have joined their efforts to support the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Sea Region (EUSAIR) implementation, ensuring deep and broad territorial coverage while enhancing Regional and Local Authorities’ appropriation of the EUSAIR main objectives and opportunities in the EUSAIR cross-pillar topics: “Research and Innovation”, “SMEs Development”, and “Skills Development”. AI-NURECC PLUS will therefore support entrepreneurship, transnational clusters, and digital innovation hubs activities for the EUSAIR.
Special attention will be paid to Youth, also through initiatives addressed to sport, integration and social inclusion, tools that are expected to further encourage community sustainable development, cohesion and solidarity in the area. AI-NURECC PLUS also aims at encouraging multi-actor networking and collaboration among representatives of the private and public sectors and civil society to foster coordination among EU, national, regional, and local policies to develop Circular Economy.
In this context, AI-NURECC PLUS will operate in the following fields: Sustainable Tourism, Cultural and Creative Industries, and Circular Economy. AI-NURECC PLUS activities will also contribute to the implementation of the Cultural and Creative Regional Ecosystems (CCRE-S3) thematic area’s objectives in the EUSAIR area. CCRE-S3 is an AI-NURECC deliverable and the first thematic area with a specific focus on a Macro-Regional Strategy.

The Forum of Adriatic and Ionian Cities can make a significant contribution to the Anna Lindh Foundation through its vast network of cities. These cities, with their rich history and culture, can offer a unique perspective on intercultural dialogue and Euro-Mediterranean cooperation. Furthermore, the Forum can contribute its expertise in youth policies, sustainable development, environmental protection and marine resource management, topics that are of great importance for the Mediterranean region.
The Forum of Adriatic and Ionian Cities wishes to join the Anna Lindh Foundation to expand its network of collaboration and promote intercultural dialogue between Adriatic and Ionian cities and the rest of the Mediterranean region. We believe that joining the Anna Lindh Foundation will allow us to share our experiences and learn from other organizations working to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development in the Mediterranean. Furthermore, we see membership as an opportunity to contribute to a broader Mediterranean agenda and to support common goals of peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
